About the Author

Keiko Kasza was born on a small Japanese island in the Inland Sea of Japan. She grew up in a typical Japanese extended family with her parents, two brothers, and grandparents. Uncles, aunts, and cousins also lived nearby. "All the steps I took growing up were very normal," Ms. Kasza says. "The only unusual thing I did was go to college in the United States." She graduated with a degree in graphic design from California State University at Northridge. Ms. Kasza married an American, and the United States has been her home ever since.After publishing five children's books in Japan and working as a graphic designer for fourteen years, Ms. Kasza decided in 1988 to devote her time to picture books. She says, "Having two small boys and two professions was too much to handle."Ms. Kasza admires many great picture-book creators, such as Leo Lionni and Maurice Sendak, but says that the work of Arnold Lobel has influenced her the most. The subtle humor and warmth he created in his books continues to inspire me," she says. "I often go back to his work when I get discouraged or lose confidence."Ms. Kasza compares the process of making a book to acting on stage under the lights:"I become the character that I'm working on at that moment. I pretend that I'm a bird looking for a mother, or a pig trying to impress his girlfriend. This book was presented at a class I took when renewing my teaching certificate as an Elementary Education major, and I've used it every year since, with kids in grades 1 through 4!! All my classmates and I simply fell in love with it! The pictures are charming and the story is sweet and cute. There's a little bit of "guess-ability" from page to page, so when I've read it in circle time or to the entire class I can maintain excitement and interest from page to page by being dramatic & keeping the children wondering what will happen next. I've used the book with 3rd and 4th graders as a writing prompt by halting the story in the middle and having the students write their own individual endings. Students can also act out the story and do "readers theater" type activities, with weaker children joining in by chanting the repetitive parts. Or, you can simply read the book to your own child, or class, or yourself, and enjoy this pleasant and kind story. Heck...it also could be turned into a math/cooking activity at the conclusion. I won't tell you why because it would spoil the story. You'll have to read the book to understand why!! 😄😀 Regardless, I'm sure you'll enjoy this book and be glad to make its acquaintance!

I used to read this book to my kindergarten and 1st graders when I was a school librarian. The children always thought it was funny, and they liked the surprise ending. I thought my granddaughter would enjoy it too, and she did. It's important to make young children enthusiastic readers and book lovers, and choosing books that they enjoy is half the battle!

This is a variation of the typical story where the wolf tries to trick an animal and make it its dinner. Illustrations are beautiful and story is comical and not scary at all for the very young. I enjoyed reading and rereading this to my grandchild!

I have read this to first and second graders and they loved it. Spoiler alert:The wolf cooks a chicken sweet food like cookies and cake to fatten her up for his dinner. But when he goes to the door the last night he finds that he has been feeding her chicks too, and they love him for it! He is nice Uncle Wolf! The children don't guess the end and are surprised and delighted by it. A great buy!

This is such a fun story. Absolutely delightful for 4, 5, 6, and 7 year olds!

This is a very cute story - I had never heard of this book until I saw it on my library's 50 books to read before kindergarten list. It helps kids understand the concept of 100 and teaches a great lesson about empathy at the same time. It is a regular in our reading rotation. Both kids (pre-K and second grader) love it.

My 6 year old granddaughter loves this book and she can read it!

I grew up with this book as a little girl and when my kids asked my Mom if we could borrow hers and we ended up having her book for months I knew it was time to buy our own copy. Very fun story! My littlest one is especially attached to this book. I definitely recommended it!

I received this book as an early birthday present from my daughter, Belle, a few days ago. My head and heart have been pouring over it for two days now and I love it!I am a THOW (tiny house on wheels) designer/builder/dweller. I own several versions of Deek’s books and all of them evidence his effluvient creative spirit and inventive use of resources. Back in 2012, when I attended his workshop (and slept in the Gypsy Junker, page 142), there were only a few books on the market on tiny houses and/or plans.This Rennaissance man (father, builder, designer, musician, artist, boy scout leader, community founder) has authored several previous books that are chock full of his amazing drawings and unconventional dream shacks. This publication stands out as a wonderful collection of many micro-shelters around the country that he has filmed and includes some structures we have built in his workshops. Deek’s writing style is charming and his observations succinct. A plethora of tiny shelters are presented with each of their customized storage innovations and construction materials in bold living color.I highly recommend it as a first book to any tiny house enthusiast for all of its tips on tools, salvaging strategy, construction basics, micro shelter plans and affordable décor ideas. Whether you are planning to construct a backyard tree house, mini-studio, office or a year-round tiny home, this book needs to be in your hands, dog-eared, enjoyed, used, and cherished for years to come.Those of us who live in tiny houses are very minimal in what stuff we keep. I have only 30 treasured books in my 184 square foot tiny house on wheels; and this is the third one from Deek! He inspired me three years ago to fulfill my Silver Bullet Tiny House challenge, and I passionately believe Deek’s micro shelters book will inspire you too!

It is really a nothing book. There are a few photos of each shelter and a generic description. There is nothing here to allow you to create your own shelter and not even that much that is inspirational. Before the Internet this may have been interesting but now a simple web search will turn up more information.

This is going to be a gift, but I sat down and carefully paged through it. My impression of it is that it really is strictly a coffee table or inspiration book. I knew that going in to some degree, but what I didn't realize is that I was either familiar with a lot of the featured builds in here already or they were the authors own builds which use a lot of the same basic ideas. That's not really bad thing per se, but I didn't personally find it any more inspiring than a good session of web surfing and Pinterest pinning. I get the impression I'd like the author though and hope the book will inprie the person I bought it for more, since he's not at a PC as often as I am.

Lots of pretty pictures but not much of substance. You will get ideas, but no help with planning or construction.

One of my most favorite "tiny structures" books. I love these ideas! Thanks, Deek! I'm going to make some 1/12 models of them to show when teaching kids how to design, build, and furnish their own tiny place by having the kids actually design, build, and furnish their own personal tiny place in miniature. This book is awesome! I love it - all the floor plans and the wonderful photographs! I definitely recommend this book for anyone wanting to design, build or even buy a tiny home. The author is able to reduce complicated subjects in to a dozen or so bullet points, very helpful in comprehending the entire subject in a brief time. "Deek" does a good job surveying the tiny home subject and making the learning process enjoyable. Could also serve as a kind of catalogue for shopping for one.

I have a collection of tiny house books which includes Deek's first book that I so loved because it was filled with such playfulness and imagination. This book with its full color pictures and eclectic sensibilities is so inspiring I could hardly sleep after reading it too close to bedtime. Still there are his comic book drawings of wacky shelter ideas, but the pictures of the actual building feats are so deliciously real that my mind enters another realm.This latest book distinguishes itself with a broad scope of buildings from simple shacks to ones on trailers to tree houses to push carts. Not only is it a collection of notable like minded shelters across the country, but it includes many of Deek's own wonderful designs. Deek delights the eye with his sense of color and design. He even offers decorating advice. Coupled with his frugal salvage-collecting sensibilities every project embodies an eco ethic and available-materials driven direction that makes every build a unique work of art.The handful of solution oriented plans at the end push the envelope as to what it is possible to live in in terms of real world utility. In particular the Woodsy Wagon pushcart and the Permatent with its outside kitchen and shower. These plans drawn up by Deek and others conjure up the spirit of the tiny house community in terms of a larger movement. But this is the book that really makes me want to get up and build something for the pure joy of it. Deek shows me in his colorful photos of every detail of these micro shelters and in his layman's terms (and plenty of made up ones too), how easily it can be done.

This is for people interested in living in a tiny house. There are many ideas including some construction information. The tiny house ideas seem to never end. Don't pick it up thinking that you will skim through it in an evening. There always seems to be a next page. Some ideas will work in a regular home. I enjoy it and have given copies to friends. Take it to bed with you. You'll be up all night.

I bought this book, because I'm a fan of Wayne Federman as a comedian and wanted to see both what his writing is like and what the big deal was about Pete Maravich. I went into this biography not expecting to enjoy it. I'm not a basketball fan and knew nothing about Pistol Pete, beyond what I'd heard Federman say on various podcasts. Because it's a rather lengthy work, I figured it would take me quite a while to make my way through, since I expected to be bored by mostly sports talk. In fact, I read the book very quickly. The writing style is infinitely readable and the story is presented in a manner that requires only the most basic layman's understanding of basketball. What really makes the book exciting, though, is Pete's story. I'd never previously considered where the hotshot style of basketball so prevalent today originated. It was Pete, and the story of how he came to be the unique and exciting player he was is absolutely fascinating to read. I like to read before bed and had a great deal of trouble convincing myself to put this one down every night; I could easily have read it all night long. Pete's story is one of dedication, passion, heartbreak, and character. This is an excellent, detailed biography of a remarkable man and his unforgettable talent. I've been recommending this book to everyone who'll listen.

Pete Maravich was undoubtedly one of the most talented basketball players ever. But he also was one of the unhappiest, most tortured and least appreciated players ever.Authors Wayne Federman and Marshall Terrill do an admirable job of chronicling Maravich's life in this authorized biography. If you have read Pistol by Mark Kriegel, you can still learn a lot from reading this biography. Federman and Terrill include more details about his career, taking the reader year-by-year. I think you can appreciate Maravich's talents even more in this book.Although Maravich's main goal was to play on a NBA championship team, it was one he never sadly never fulfilled. He began his pro career with the Atlanta Hawks as the NBA's Great White Hope after a storied college career at LSU. He was resented and ridiculed for his showmanship. After four frustrating years in Atlanta, he was traded to the New Orleans Jazz, an expansion team, where he was expected to be the savior. He finally ended his career with the Boston Celtics, where he didn't receive as much playing time as he expected.Perhaps Spencer Haywood, who played with Maravich, summed up Pete's career best:"Pete is my pick as the most talented guard and the most misunderstood soul ever to play the game. The rap on Pete is that he was selfish, wasn't a team player. Completely untrue. He had unbelievable skills, he could score on anyone. But he loved to pass the ball, too, to involve his teammates in the offense. He never played on a great team, however, so the scoring burden always fell on him--along with the reputation of being a gunner."Former teammate Lou Hudson reflected another opinion of Pete: "Raw-talent wise, he's the greatest who ever played the game. But always, no matter what he does, he will be a loser. That's his legacy."So much of Pete's pain came from his total investment in the game. "The only thing that ever mattered to me was basketball; I sold my soul to the game."When Maravich retired from the NBA after 10 seasons, there were no farewell tours or fan fare. He had become disenchanted with the game. He left quietly as the next generation of players like Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, Isiah Thomas and Dominque Wilkins were being embraced for their showmanship and flair, much of it learned from Pete.Pete's life turned around in November 1982, when he accepted Jesus Christ as his savior. For the first time, he was at peace. He gave away most of his trophies and awards, saying he would rather be known as a Christian than as a basketball player.He became the second youngest player inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1987 as age 39. He died in 1988 at the age of 40 after suffering a massive heart attack while playing basketball in a gym at a church. In 1996, he was named to the NBA's Top 50 All-Time Team.When he died, Nick Charles of CNN described Pete as "so talented he made you gasp, so tortured he made you wince."

A wonderfully written book about one of the best basketball players ever. I don't read as much as I should but I have quickly read this story and have enjoyed each chapter and the story of Pistol Pete who was such a unique player in his time. A must read for any old school fan like me or anyone fond of biographies of sports figures in general. I had previously read Mark Kreigal's biography on Pete and enjoyed it also. That book was excellent and this one is just as good or better. I highly recommend this book and have nothing but good things to say about it. What a great read!

The story is well told and engages your interest. I did get the feeling that the authorized nature of the biography interfered with the telling of the whole story. There is little mention of Pistol's drinking problems and occasional wild behavior. Aside from a feeling of not receiving the entire story, the book was quite enjoyable.

Excellent book to read about the greatest basketball player ever. The author details exact moments in Pete's life and leaves out nothing. I've read other books about Pete and this is the best about telling how Pete worked harder than anybody in basketball and dedicate himself to the sport. He deserves to be a true legend.

I am an avid cook. I have been collecting and USING cookbooks for over 50 years. My favorites by Julia Child, Rombauer and Becker have graced my kitchen for all that time. But THIS BOOK IS THE BEST for avid cooks and beginners alike!!!! The combination of fabulous recipes, gorgeous photography and the author's endearing descriptions of varied culinary and life experiences are really a joy to read. This is a fabulous gift to give especially to oneself first and foremost!!!!Then, to those you care about a lot!

This is my family's new favorite recipe book. We've been using it several times a week since we got it, and we can't get enough of it. I particularly recommend the beet and lentil soup. Some of the recipes are a bit involved, such as the tahdig, so they're best done as weekend or party dishes, but this is a beautiful book that will definitely turn you on to Persian cuisine.

This is a story book that will make you hungry to delight in life around the table. The author is a real Los Angeles mama and wife who loves to feed her family and friends and taste life one flavor at a time. The recipes are diverse and well written and the stories take you to memories of her life. Thanks to Amazon it's also convenient to find the random ingredients without having to go on a scavenger hunt for Saffron or rose water!

So excited for this book...I absolutely love Persian food. I've only made the tadig and the saffron chicken -- both sets of instructions were so easy to follow. And delicious. The saffron chicken was so easy to make, ready in about 30 minutes and DELICIOUS!!!! If you love Persian food, you need this book. Can't wait to dive in further and read some of the narrative. Gorgeous book.

As a first generation Persian, I love the recepies in the book, well explained and easy to follow. The photos are self explanatory as well.

It highlights the unbearable choices we sometimes must make to protect those we care about the most. And weaves the realities of homelessness, fear, and despair, with the love that finds us in the most unsuspecting and extraordinary places. Padma's masterful storytelling shines in The Bridge Home. Highly recommend!

I began "The Bridge Home' at bedtime the day I received it and could not put it down. I had to know how it ended. So I started reading backwards!! Padma is an incredible storyteller. The story reminded me of the Boxcar Children series. I do hope there is a sequel. I want to know what happens to Rukku, Arul, and Muthu.

Another winner from Padma Venkatraman! This book tugged at my heart, and I could not put it down. The story of the 2 sisters Viji and Rukku, their will to survive against all odds, their closeness and love for each other, and their adventures in Chennai, with Arul and Muthi who become like a family to them is beautifully told. The characters are so well portrayed. The daily struggle of the 4 homeless children, as rag pickers to get some food to eat, and a place to sleep made me cry. The relationship between them, as it grew stronger and closer made me smile. It left me wanting to know more about them and wonder what their path ahead would hold for them.

A story of friendship and resilience. Vivid, emotional, heartwarming and heartbreaking at the same time.

After her father hits their mom (and them) once too often, eleven-year-old Viji and her slightly older, "slow" sister, Ruku decide to run away from home, believing that seeking refuge on the streets of Chennai, India is preferable to remaining in such a volatile environment. Luckily, they meet up with the co-owner of a teashop soon after disembarking from their bus who gives them a temporary job, advice and a bag of fancy beads for Ruku, who eventually turns them into much needed funds. They also acquire an abandoned puppy, who proves a welcome companion, as well as befriend two boys their age who have been living on the streets for some time and know their way about. The children quickly form a close-knit family, pooling their skills and resources to earn money for food and shelter supplies. Despite the unpleasant work of scavenging reusable trash and the occasional run-in with bullies, the four youths successfully use their wits, compassion, religious faith and sense of humor to survive - until a problem occurs that requires adult intervention. But while they have a chance to seek help from a seemingly kind benefactor, they may also risk being exploited. Will Viji be able to overcome her mistrust and be able to find the aid she and her friends need?Thoughts: This book's subject sounds like it might be depressing (I certainly thought that when I chose it), but over all, it's uplifting. It will likely make you choke up at least a few times while reading, though. The overall optimism and good humor of the four children, even in the grimmest circumstances, is inspiring without being saccharine, and the portrayal of the special needs character is anything but patronizing. The book is both heartwarming and heart-breaking, and its depiction of these characters (based on the author's experience with street children), is realistic and poignant.

When Viji's mother does nothing to protect herself from the abusive behavior of Viji's father, the desperate girl decides to take her sister Ruuku and run away to the city. Ruuku is developmentally disabled, but Viji feels that anything has to be better than their home situation. They make it to the city and are lucky to find some friendly help, including a woman whose husband runs a restaurant who gives them a little work, food, and beads for Ruuku. They also meet fellow street children, Arul and Muthi, who show them the ropes and make a home with them on a bridge, using tarps and mats. The boys show them how to make money by going through the garbage and selling metal and glass, and generally help them survive in their new reality. Arul is a Christian, and his entire family was lost in tsunami type accident, and Muthu has his own sad back story that makes him wary of people. Even after the rag man destroys their bridge home, they gather their forces and live in a cemetery. Eventually, however, the rainy season brings mosquitoes that cause fever in the children, and Viji is forced to accept help from a local children's charity. She is reunited with her father, but chooses to stay in the children's home, where she has been able to put together a life that includes more education than she would have gotten otherwise.I am always happy to see books about how children live in other countries, and Venkatraman has based this on her own mother's work with disadvantaged children in India, as well as on many interviews. The details of what is needed to survive are tremendously appealing to young readers. Think of The Box Car Children or A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, which I read for the details like washing the dishes in the creek with sand or going to the store for just one potato. This is a great book to hand to readers who love Cruz's Everlasting Nora or Yang's Front Desk. While I loved this author's A Time to Dance and Climbing the Stairs, novels in verse and historical fiction don't do all that well in my library-- this hits the popular features of problem novels just right and will circulate a lot.
