I bought this book, because I'm a fan of Wayne Federman as a comedian and wanted to see both what his writing is like and what the big deal was about Pete Maravich. I went into this biography not expecting to enjoy it. I'm not a basketball fan and knew nothing about Pistol Pete, beyond what I'd heard Federman say on various podcasts. Because it's a rather lengthy work, I figured it would take me quite a while to make my way through, since I expected to be bored by mostly sports talk. In fact, I read the book very quickly. The writing style is infinitely readable and the story is presented in a manner that requires only the most basic layman's understanding of basketball. What really makes the book exciting, though, is Pete's story. I'd never previously considered where the hotshot style of basketball so prevalent today originated. It was Pete, and the story of how he came to be the unique and exciting player he was is absolutely fascinating to read. I like to read before bed and had a great deal of trouble convincing myself to put this one down every night; I could easily have read it all night long. Pete's story is one of dedication, passion, heartbreak, and character. This is an excellent, detailed biography of a remarkable man and his unforgettable talent. I've been recommending this book to everyone who'll listen.

Pete Maravich was undoubtedly one of the most talented basketball players ever. But he also was one of the unhappiest, most tortured and least appreciated players ever.Authors Wayne Federman and Marshall Terrill do an admirable job of chronicling Maravich's life in this authorized biography. If you have read Pistol by Mark Kriegel, you can still learn a lot from reading this biography. Federman and Terrill include more details about his career, taking the reader year-by-year. I think you can appreciate Maravich's talents even more in this book.Although Maravich's main goal was to play on a NBA championship team, it was one he never sadly never fulfilled. He began his pro career with the Atlanta Hawks as the NBA's Great White Hope after a storied college career at LSU. He was resented and ridiculed for his showmanship. After four frustrating years in Atlanta, he was traded to the New Orleans Jazz, an expansion team, where he was expected to be the savior. He finally ended his career with the Boston Celtics, where he didn't receive as much playing time as he expected.Perhaps Spencer Haywood, who played with Maravich, summed up Pete's career best:"Pete is my pick as the most talented guard and the most misunderstood soul ever to play the game. The rap on Pete is that he was selfish, wasn't a team player. Completely untrue. He had unbelievable skills, he could score on anyone. But he loved to pass the ball, too, to involve his teammates in the offense. He never played on a great team, however, so the scoring burden always fell on him--along with the reputation of being a gunner."Former teammate Lou Hudson reflected another opinion of Pete: "Raw-talent wise, he's the greatest who ever played the game. But always, no matter what he does, he will be a loser. That's his legacy."So much of Pete's pain came from his total investment in the game. "The only thing that ever mattered to me was basketball; I sold my soul to the game."When Maravich retired from the NBA after 10 seasons, there were no farewell tours or fan fare. He had become disenchanted with the game. He left quietly as the next generation of players like Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, Isiah Thomas and Dominque Wilkins were being embraced for their showmanship and flair, much of it learned from Pete.Pete's life turned around in November 1982, when he accepted Jesus Christ as his savior. For the first time, he was at peace. He gave away most of his trophies and awards, saying he would rather be known as a Christian than as a basketball player.He became the second youngest player inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1987 as age 39. He died in 1988 at the age of 40 after suffering a massive heart attack while playing basketball in a gym at a church. In 1996, he was named to the NBA's Top 50 All-Time Team.When he died, Nick Charles of CNN described Pete as "so talented he made you gasp, so tortured he made you wince."

A wonderfully written book about one of the best basketball players ever. I don't read as much as I should but I have quickly read this story and have enjoyed each chapter and the story of Pistol Pete who was such a unique player in his time. A must read for any old school fan like me or anyone fond of biographies of sports figures in general. I had previously read Mark Kreigal's biography on Pete and enjoyed it also. That book was excellent and this one is just as good or better. I highly recommend this book and have nothing but good things to say about it. What a great read!

The story is well told and engages your interest. I did get the feeling that the authorized nature of the biography interfered with the telling of the whole story. There is little mention of Pistol's drinking problems and occasional wild behavior. Aside from a feeling of not receiving the entire story, the book was quite enjoyable.

Excellent book to read about the greatest basketball player ever. The author details exact moments in Pete's life and leaves out nothing. I've read other books about Pete and this is the best about telling how Pete worked harder than anybody in basketball and dedicate himself to the sport. He deserves to be a true legend.

The combination of fabulous recipes, gorgeous photography and the author's endearing descriptions of varied culinary and life experiences are really a joy to read. This is a fabulous gift to give especially to oneself first and foremost!!!!Then, to those you care about a lot!

This is my family's new favorite recipe book. We've been using it several times a week since we got it, and we can't get enough of it. I particularly recommend the beet and lentil soup. Some of the recipes are a bit involved, such as the tahdig, so they're best done as weekend or party dishes, but this is a beautiful book that will definitely turn you on to Persian cuisine.

This is a story book that will make you hungry to delight in life around the table. The author is a real Los Angeles mama and wife who loves to feed her family and friends and taste life one flavor at a time. The recipes are diverse and well written and the stories take you to memories of her life. Thanks to Amazon it's also convenient to find the random ingredients without having to go on a scavenger hunt for Saffron or rose water!

So excited for this book...I absolutely love Persian food. I've only made the tadig and the saffron chicken -- both sets of instructions were so easy to follow. And delicious. The saffron chicken was so easy to make, ready in about 30 minutes and DELICIOUS!!!! If you love Persian food, you need this book. Can't wait to dive in further and read some of the narrative. Gorgeous book.

As a first generation Persian, I love the recepies in the book, well explained and easy to follow. The photos are self explanatory as well.

Cookbooks are one of my favorite items to gift the people who have everything, and this book is my new favorite one to gift. So unique and beautiful. You will love reading through this and trying new things in your kitchen.

I was hesitant at first but this book is fantastic. I have made many of the recipes and they all have been delicious and yet simple approach to cooking Persian food. I also love the presentation of her recipe. Highly recommended!A Persian Cook

I began "The Bridge Home' at bedtime the day I received it and could not put it down. I had to know how it ended. So I started reading backwards!! Padma is an incredible storyteller. The story reminded me of the Boxcar Children series. I do hope there is a sequel. I want to know what happens to Rukku, Arul, and Muthu.

Another winner from Padma Venkatraman! This book tugged at my heart, and I could not put it down. The story of the 2 sisters Viji and Rukku, their will to survive against all odds, their closeness and love for each other, and their adventures in Chennai, with Arul and Muthi who become like a family to them is beautifully told. The characters are so well portrayed. The daily struggle of the 4 homeless children, as rag pickers to get some food to eat, and a place to sleep made me cry. The relationship between them, as it grew stronger and closer made me smile. It left me wanting to know more about them and wonder what their path ahead would hold for them.

A story of friendship and resilience. Vivid, emotional, heartwarming and heartbreaking at the same time.

After her father hits their mom (and them) once too often, eleven-year-old Viji and her slightly older, "slow" sister, Ruku decide to run away from home, believing that seeking refuge on the streets of Chennai, India is preferable to remaining in such a volatile environment. Luckily, they meet up with the co-owner of a teashop soon after disembarking from their bus who gives them a temporary job, advice and a bag of fancy beads for Ruku, who eventually turns them into much needed funds. They also acquire an abandoned puppy, who proves a welcome companion, as well as befriend two boys their age who have been living on the streets for some time and know their way about. The children quickly form a close-knit family, pooling their skills and resources to earn money for food and shelter supplies. Despite the unpleasant work of scavenging reusable trash and the occasional run-in with bullies, the four youths successfully use their wits, compassion, religious faith and sense of humor to survive - until a problem occurs that requires adult intervention. But while they have a chance to seek help from a seemingly kind benefactor, they may also risk being exploited. Will Viji be able to overcome her mistrust and be able to find the aid she and her friends need?Thoughts: This book's subject sounds like it might be depressing (I certainly thought that when I chose it), but over all, it's uplifting. It will likely make you choke up at least a few times while reading, though. The overall optimism and good humor of the four children, even in the grimmest circumstances, is inspiring without being saccharine, and the portrayal of the special needs character is anything but patronizing. The book is both heartwarming and heart-breaking, and its depiction of these characters (based on the author's experience with street children), is realistic and poignant.

When Viji's mother does nothing to protect herself from the abusive behavior of Viji's father, the desperate girl decides to take her sister Ruuku and run away to the city. Ruuku is developmentally disabled, but Viji feels that anything has to be better than their home situation. They make it to the city and are lucky to find some friendly help, including a woman whose husband runs a restaurant who gives them a little work, food, and beads for Ruuku. They also meet fellow street children, Arul and Muthi, who show them the ropes and make a home with them on a bridge, using tarps and mats. The boys show them how to make money by going through the garbage and selling metal and glass, and generally help them survive in their new reality. Arul is a Christian, and his entire family was lost in tsunami type accident, and Muthu has his own sad back story that makes him wary of people. Even after the rag man destroys their bridge home, they gather their forces and live in a cemetery. Eventually, however, the rainy season brings mosquitoes that cause fever in the children, and Viji is forced to accept help from a local children's charity. She is reunited with her father, but chooses to stay in the children's home, where she has been able to put together a life that includes more education than she would have gotten otherwise.I am always happy to see books about how children live in other countries, and Venkatraman has based this on her own mother's work with disadvantaged children in India, as well as on many interviews. The details of what is needed to survive are tremendously appealing to young readers. Think of The Box Car Children or A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, which I read for the details like washing the dishes in the creek with sand or going to the store for just one potato. This is a great book to hand to readers who love Cruz's Everlasting Nora or Yang's Front Desk. While I loved this author's A Time to Dance and Climbing the Stairs, novels in verse and historical fiction don't do all that well in my library-- this hits the popular features of problem novels just right and will circulate a lot.

This book is a comprehensive beautiful work of art with beautiful styling, amazing photography and secretary, and talent that literally bursts from page to page. An amazing cross section of the most talented artists in the industry. This isn't just a coffee table book, it's an OMG I just spilt the tea on the book due to its amazing selection of drag performers known nationally or locally and those that you want to know more about and with this book I hope to learn and see more from all of this talent!

If you want to see some mind blowingly gorgeous women, Magnus’s book is a MUST VIEW/READ!!!I had gone first, with my best friend in college(who simply had been gay) to a few of the gay bars he enjoyed in Omaha, Nebraska (circa-1980/81), and there wasn’t much more than a few cross-dressers.Then circa 1985/86, after learning of my youngest brother coming out, I actually saw my 1st Drag Show(at the Hide-n-Seek, in Colorado Springs)..BUT “REALLY, FINALLY SAW” - Drag, when I caught Season 2, of “RuPaul’s Drag Race”, and then........ I was “HOOKED”!!! and, haven’t missed a Season of Drag Race, or Drag Race All-Stars SINCE!!!!So, Magnus Hasting’s “WHY DRAG?” was almost like a Yearbook....... filled with familiar and unfamiliar photos..... filled with quips, quotes, insights, and biographies...... ONLY LACKING the occasional - “Best Wishes”, or “Good Luck” John.....*with all that said..... if you aren’t fascinated and/or blown away by this book, after perusing it..... you have no soul for “Art” and/or “Beauty”!!!!

Such a great purchase for content and conversation. Having this book out on a coffee table or shelf with definitely start a conversation about drag with your visitors The photography is stunning to say it plainly. Also, I learned some new names of Queens and performers that I was not familiar with but the book also does a good job showing household names that RPDR followers would be familiar with.

This is a gorgeous coffee table book. Each photo captivates -- the skill of the performer and the photographer in each is clear. It's also nice that this book celebrates varied forms of drag. Fishy queens and pageant queens are gorgeous, but it takes all types to make the rainbow bright. I love it.

Absolutely essential if you are a fan of the art of drag. Magnus takes incredible photos. This book is also a great conversation starter if you leave it on your coffeetable for parties. :D

This book is a work of art in my opinion!

This product is a five star product hands down. Unfortunately even though I ordered a brand new one, i got a beat up and used one. It was supposed to be a gift for my boyfriend for his birthday and I opened it to make sure it was in good condition. Some of the inner spine was falling out, pages were corner folded, and there were obnoxious amount of rips on the pages. The cover slip was bent on the edges. Great product that I am positive he will love, but I’m disappointed to not have gone with a seller who wouldn’t lie to me about the quality of the product.
