My husband and I are traveling to the Tetons for the first time later this month and wanted to read something about the area. We highly recommend this book for its broad scope and fascinating details. The writing is excellent providing a wealth of information about the area as well as colorful details about the "characters" who have lived there.

This is the book for the best and most concise and interesting "guide" history of Jackson's Hole. I have been an interpretive guide in Jackson's Hole for 10 years and I use the stories in this book to help folks understand the story of the area.

Pretty solid book on the history of Jackson Hole...very in-depth.

Great read! Introduces amazing characters!

You could tell it was written by an outsider

This is a well-written history of Jackson Hole, Wyoming, from its geography to the concerns its residents have today about unlimited growth. Robert Betts writes about the earliest explorers, the coming of the fur trappers, early settlers, homesteaders, the development of the dude ranch, and the bitter debates that eventually led to the formation of Teton National Park. More detailed chapters include fascinating accounts of John Colter, perhaps the first white man to view the Tetons; thumbnail sketches of some of the more famous mountainmen criss-crossing Jackson Hole before the Civil War; some local legends involving the likes of Nick Wilson and Beaver Dick; the disastrous and foolish Doane expedition along the Snake River in the winter of 1876; the summer (1883) President Chester A. Arthur visited the area with members of his cabinet to hunt and fish; the problems the sheepmen faced when they came to the valley; and the recent settlers who display the rugged individualism of their ancestors. Though relating the history of the Jackson Hole area, Betts is just as concerned with presenting a captivating and entertaining narrative, which he succeeds in doing marvelously. Many illustrations grace the text. Anyone with any interest in the Jackson Hole area will find this book worth reading.

I am a tour guide in the Teton area and this book is a must have for people interested in the area. It gives great first hand accounts of the original pioneers that settled in the Tetons.

By no means an exhaustive reader of Jameson or of postmodern theory more generally, I found this collection of essays to be a useful, often illuminating, distillation of recent theoretical work on the relationship between art, consumerism, and temporality. The book is a fine supplement, if not sequel, to Jameson's magisterial *Postmodernism, or, The Cultural Logic of Late Capitalism*. But the essays presented here also stand on their own as discrete exempla of a properly dialectical, which is to say historically and materially grounded, account of postmodernism.Far from being a free-floating notion of relativistic difference, Jameson argues that postmodernism is a specifically constituted ideology and aesthetic that derives from tendencies in post-World War II U.S. consumer culture. Chapters 1-4 (out of 8) are brilliant analytical unfoldings of this essential argument; included here are the classic, and might I add lucidly written, essays "Postmodernism and Consumer Society" and "Marxism and Postmodernism."Chapters 5-8, representing Jameson's more recent forays into postmodern theory, are less satisfying but remain theoretically relevant. Chapter 5 doesn't really arrive at its object of analysis: the relationship between "end of art" and "end of history" discourses at the end of the Cold War. Chapter 6, on the image-form in contemporary cinema, lacks a certain rigor in approaching filmic texts, and its judgment on conceptions of beauty (whose appeal in today's independent cinema, it seems to me, doesn't necessarily entail the fetishization of individualistic sentimentality) is suspect. Still, and as another reviewer has noted, the ending of Chapter 8, "The Brick and the Balloon," is deeply illuminating with its call for a reconsideration of nostalgia in view of the ungrounding of history by consumer culture.In sum, the collection as a whole offers what I think are essential readings in postmodern theory. These are not always the "easiest" pieces to read, but the very claim to easiness would seem to be one of the things Jameson is striking out against in his critique of consumer society. In any case, I found a majority of these essays to be accessible and well-written, although (and this is a crucial distinction) conceptually difficult. If you're willing to follow Jameson's train of thought, whether you agree, disagree, or otherwise -- that is, if you're willing simply to follow the implicit logic and its attendant textual readings, I suspect you will not mind making your way through the prose.

I picked this one up because I thought it would be a nice relaxing series of short essays for a cross country plane trip. I was a bit disappointed. Its essays are of uneven quality, the first and last two being the best, and in order to get the little nuggets of pithy critical theory goodness out of muddled mass that is the rest of this book one has to do a bit of searching. In fact Cultural Turn was almost completely unmemorable, except for the interesting bit on architecture and spectrality in "Brick and the Balloon" (The last essay) and a few of the remarks on the myth of scarcity in the "Second World City" that are to be found in one of the first two pieces. Jameson's writing in Cultural Turn seemed crippled by a greater than usual density of language and jargon, unlike in Political Unconsious, which make several of these pieces tough on either the casual reader (like myself), or the reader who is not versed in Jameson's ideas or specific field of Marxist aesthetic critique. A good addition to other writings by Jameson and on various subjects, but not a pleasant escape or introduction.

This book is not much like other volumes that Merwin had already published. That says something about the time in which it was written. The poems are built from bare and austere images of things to signify a sense of loss most likely due to an early mid-life crisis magnified by the social crisis of the Vietnam War. This is a book that cemented Merwin's style and initiated themes that continued to evolve in subsequent works--topically elusive, void of punctuation. short lines and short poems, deeply rooted in nature and consciousness, building upon a participation mystique; this is one of the most significant and influential early deep-imagistic works. The Lice first came out in the midst of Viet Nam and ecological crises, and re-issue at present regrettably is all too apt."When the war is over--we will be proud of course the air will be--Good for breathing at last..." What's Wrong with Postmodernism collects seven of Christopher Norris's reviews of recent work in literary theory. Throughout, Norris appears to assume that his readers possess substantial background knowledge in politics and philosophy as well as literary theory. The first is to criticize postmodernism, described as "the upshot of a generalized incredulity with regard to all theories, truth-claims, or 'scientific' notions of system and method." Through discussion of Jean Baudrillard's Selected Writings and Stanley Fish's Doing What Comes Naturally, Norris argues that in addition to its obvious intellectual flaws, postmodernism leads in the political sphere to malaise, cynicism, and apathy. The appeal of postmodernism, he suggests, is due to the failure of literary theories based on Ferdinand de Saussure's structuralism; fortunately, because there are approaches to the philosophy of language other than Saussure's, the postmodernist turn is not irresistible. The second purpose of What's Wrong with Postmodernism is to defend deconstruction--and its patron saint, Jacques Derrida--against the accusations of postmodernist irrationalism found in Jürgen Habermas's The Philosophical Discourse of Modernity and John M. Ellis's Against Deconstruction. I don't always agree with Christopher Norris but he is an intelligent, and perhaps more importantly, a readable interpreter of the many issues surrounding postmodernism. He is a critical, yet sympathetic reader of some of the major figures associated with this (perhaps almost meaningless) term- like Derrida and DeMan. If you think some of the best and most complicated thinking in the last 50 years came from such figures, Norris helps you understand them better. If you think it's all a big mistake, you will have some very telling arguments at your disposal. This is a great place to start or continue the exploration of these remarkable writers.

This book really creeped me out. I think Norris is nuts & unhinged. On author's reading, Derrida is a defender of Enlightenment reason. You've heard that right! Do I need to say more? He writes that Kant's was foundationalist project. It wasn't it. I find Norris disingenuous and arrogant in his long-winded style of writing. Also, his arguments are silly & immature as he criticizes Habermas, Elis and others for their allegedly simplistic views on deconstruction. Why are they simplistic? Because although Habermas and Elis captured 99% of the essence of deconstruction but ignored some hysterically small side-point which could be classified under the 99% anyway, THEREFORE they "misread" those "fine" works (Of Grammatology). Noris himself is a joke while he constantly talks down to other philosophers accusing them of something they are not guilty of. Very irritating.If you are knew to philosophy or postmodernism in particular don't buy this book. It will only confuse you as Norris is sabotaging the enlightenment project and spreading his own postmodernist propaganda. Even the title is made to believe you Norris is not a defender of Postmodernism. The whole book is a straw-man.
