I thought that this would have more information in about activities, etc. like kayaking or walking tours. However, I didn't find that the book has very much information about different types of outdoor activities and getting around. Also, the type is very big. I suppose that is helpful for people with bad eyesight, but it didn't make me happy. I prefer a smaller book with more information like Lonely Planet. The reviews of the hotels seemed to be biased. The thing that I liked about this book was that it had interesting review of the Grand Etang park.

About the Author

Although still a young researcher, Dr Robert Morkot has already led a distinguished academic life. After completing his PhD on 'The Economic and Cultural Exchange between Kush and Egypt', he was Scholar in Sudanese Archaeology and Meroitic at Humbolt-Universitat in Berlin and then Fellow in Near Eastern Archaeology at the University of Oxford (1987-1991). Since 1992 he has devoted more time to writing and traveling, although he has continued to lecture part-time at the Universities of Surrey, Exeter, and London. He was one of the authors of the controversial book 'Centuries of Darkness' (1991) and is the author of numerous articles on Egypt and the Aegean world.

Highly recommended and quite informing, if you're into learning about ancient African civilization, this is definitely the book for you.

Robert Morkot's contribution on Nubia in "Centuries of Darkness" by Peter James prompted me to buy this book. His chapter on the origins of the Kushite kingdom interested me primarily because, quite apart from the chronological controversy, I knew very little about the civilisations of the African kingdoms to the south of Egypt and only a passing familiarity with the pharaohs of the 25th Dynasty of Egypt.In an introduction to the Notes section of his book, Professor Morkot states that there are still relatively few general accounts of the 25th dynasty and much of the detailed argument and discussion has appeared as articles in academic journals or proceedings of Nubian and Meroitic conferences. He goes on to point out that most books published on Nubia have tended to discuss the 25th Dynasty in the context of monuments in the Sudan and treat the Egyptian monuments and to some extent the events and policies as tangential. This book, then, sets out to address this gap in the record.The book can be divided into the following sections:* Chapters I to III review the geography and European rediscovery of Nubia first by wealthy travellers, and then by archaeologists from about the middle of the 19th century onwards. These are important chapters because they clearly lay out the most significant hypotheses put forward by the earlier archaeologists who tended to base their assumptions on preconceived notions of the superiority of the Egyptian kingdoms over those of the their southern neighbours, resulting in misconceptions which influenced the study of the kingdoms of Nubia and Meroe up to fairly recent times.* Chapters IV to VIII deal with Nubia and the Egyptians in Nubia during the period of the Old Kingdom, 1st Intermediate Period, Middle Kingdom, 2nd Intermediate Period and the New Kingdom which ended about 1069BC. These chapters primarily discuss the role of the Egyptian state in Nubia - with the exception of Chapter V which reviews the rise of the Kushite kingdom of Kerma during the 2nd Intermediate period.* Chapters IX and X deals with the 3rd Intermediate period; Chapter IX with the Libyan Dynasties up to the first appearance of the Kushite Kings in Thebes around 750BC, at a time when little is known about what was happening in Lower and Upper Nubia, the areas along the Nile above the 1st Cataract at what is now Aswan; and Chapter X with the emergence of the Assyrian empire and appearance of their armies in western Asia and the eastern coast of the Mediterranean.* Chapters XI and XII describe records and monuments of Alara and Kashta, the founding kings of the Kushite Dynasty of Napata.* Chapters XIII to XXI describe records and monuments of the four Kushite pharaohs who ruled over the whole of Egypt - Piye, Shabaqo, Shebitqo, Taharqo. The Egyptian and Nubian records are now supplemented by those of Assyria, Babylonia, western Asia, and Biblical sources. There are complete descriptions of Piye's campaign into the Delta and subseqent re-unification of Egypt, and the incursions of the Assyrians into western Asia and finally into Egypt itself with the campaigns of Esarhaddon and Assurbanipal in 674BC, 671BC, 669BC and 667BC.* Chapter XXII, the final chapter, covers the reign of the Tanwetamani, the last recognised Kushite pharaoh of Egypt and the unification of Egypt under Psamtik I, the first king of the 26th Saite Dynasty.I found the book to be eminently readable and most interesting, although there often seemed to be frequent repetitions about artefacts and events, which didn't detract from the reading so much as to make me wonder how the book was put together. Professor Morkot is also quite fond of the word "doubtless" - which is a warning flag - since what follows is his interpretation of events without much evidence to back up the statements. Notwithstanding this, I now have a clear idea of the difficulties of developing a coherent picture of the Kushite kingdoms, and I think Professor Morkot has succeeded in being fairly even-handed with the more egregious controversies, including those various hypotheses concerning the geneaology of Kushite royalty and the Kushite succession. The chronological topic in "Centuries of Darkness" plays only a minor role in this book as it is primarily an issue with respect to the period before the accession of kings Alara and Kashta.Invariably, owing to space limitations if nothing else, I needed some references to hand to help fill in the gaps and my lapses of memory when I was reading this book. These included* Ian Shaw's "Oxford History of Ancient Egypt" for the periods up to the end of the 3rd Intermediate period* Several websites which provided more information about the pharaohs of the confusing period of the 3rd Intermediate period, and detailed maps for those inevitable places which do not appear on any map.* George Roux's "Ancient Iraq" when it came to the accounts of the emergence of the Assyrian empire into western Asia.The book has many interesting illustrations, the maps were helpful for understanding the geography of the Nile up to Khartoum, the notes on each chapter are extensive and helpful, and for further reading there is a useful bibliography of works of about 170 notable scholars and archeologists of the past 100 years.This book has certainly enhanced my knowledge of this subject, and I recommend it to those persons who want a good overview of the Nubian civilisations up to the end of the 25th Dynasty. It has also renewed my interest in the 3rd Intermediate Period, and Kenneth Kitchen's book on that subject is one of the next books on my reading list.

The writing was well done, but the subject of the story was an idiot. I admired his gumption in doing what he set out to do, but he was too full of himself to admit his limitations and way too stupid by not going out into Alaska without being properly prepared.The author did a nice job of portraying Alaska; I lived throughout the state for 2 years, so I can relate. He did a nice, but failed attempt to elevate the hypocritical, selfish, spoiled, idiotic young man to some sort of icon. He tried to build pity for McCandless, but it didn't work for me. McCandless, to me, was anything but; not because he failed, but by the way he tried to live. He set his dreams in fantasy, not in reality. He abhorred reality. He relished everyone about him; forgave them their foilibles; everyone but his parents. His parents gave him everything, yet it repulsed him.This is definitely a tale of a foolish young man throwing his life away without caring about those that care about him. Sadly, but truthfully, the world is a better place without fools like him. I feel sorry for the parents that loved him, but can't shed a tear for him. It just goes to show that when it comes to children, all you can do is raise them. No matter what you do, it'll never be good enough.

Erin Hunter is a collective artist. The Warriors series is one of the best series in the history of Children's Literature. This series is for emergent readers of 8 and up. If you are a parent and worry about the content you're children are reading: I applaud you! A lot of books that seem to be written for children are quite graphic. The graphic nature of the Warriors books does not exceed cat fights and cats that might breed with different fathers to their kits. This is actually true to nature and does not go into details of a sexual nature, yet stays in the context of reproduction. the violence is not too graphic for children and I read these books to my young, Christian niece and nephews. The cats have different clans and resemble Native American culture quite closely, which, being half Native myself, I was delighted to discover. This is an incredible series that even adults can enjoy along with their kids or alone.

This book gave a great insight of the path Chris McCandless's troubled life took.I watched the movie "Into The Wild" a few years back and have always been curious and saddened to think about Chris's journey. This book seemed to clear the story a bit. Sometimes I had a lump in my throat thinking that this is not a "character" in a made up story but a real life that seemed to yearn for a peace that only existed in his heart. Jon Krakauer does a great job of giving us a key hole view of "Alex's" life. The good times even when he had nothing. I personally feel like unfortunately Chris was a troubled individual weather it was mental imbalance or emotional disconnect and after this book I feel so sad for his torment. The movie left me disliking his parents, but this book turned that emotion completely around. And I loved the Epilogue. Thank you Jon Krakauer for that. If the movie intrigued you most definitely read the book.

I can't believe I'm sitting here writing a review on a book about cats, but after finishing this six-part series, I felt compelled to share my thoughts, as I couldn't get enough.Erin Hunter has managed to create a compelling world with richly-detailed characters and fleshed out plots that fill every emotion- happiness, sadness, loyalty, diversity, mourning, grief, revenge, and friendship.Despite being children's fiction, the themes and stories have many adult elements for reader's of all ages (I'm a thirty year old guy who unabashedly loves his pets) with a story on the level of Watership Down. You become passionate about the characters and their tribulations, and are heartbroken by the not infrequent deaths from warring clans or nature.I bought this book as light bedtime reading, and quickly purchased the remaining five. I honestly couldn't put it down and if you're looking at this, I'm confident you won't be able to either.Now that it's over, I'm so happy that I've got about 20 other books in the series to read.

I actually didn't know what I was getting when I bought this series. My son told me about it, so I decided to try it. Especially since I am an avid reader! I honestly couldn't stop turning pages! And found myself reading whenever I had a second to spare...and sometimes when I didn't! It's an interesting, fun book, in my opinion. If you love cats, it's a plus. Try the first one, you may find yourself hooked, like I was.

I have to get into an un-biased mindset, or at least try too. I have been reading these books over and over again since middle school so it’s rather obvious that I love and really enjoy this series.I really love the new covers, so much so that I want to buy the books I already have just to get those new covers. However, I also enjoy the classic covers so I’ll be including both.I love having the lists of different cats and the maps, the only thing I have a small problem with is the names being overly repeated. I would say something more about that and the repeating what’s going on but this is pretty much a children’s book.Well, children through early teens but I will also say that this books is for adults. I’m 24 and still really enjoy these books.Even remembering what was going to happen, the authors wrote this in a way to evoke emotion and to create connections quickly. I didn’t want to set this down and when I finished it, I went right on to the next book.For what this story is, I feel like everything that happens is realistic in that world and it’s rather interesting to see the world from a cat’s point of view.I would highly recommend to young and older audiences.

The Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions show us all how we can see our own character defects help others, and improve our conscious contact with God.It not only relates to drinking but living as well. Highly recommended by us both not only for recovering people, but for family and friends and anyone who wishes to live a better life.

Love this book for 12-step recovery reading. In working the 12 steps with my sponsor we went back and forth between the Big Book and the 12&12, and I do that with my sponsees as well. I love the Big Book but the 12&12 puts each step in a way that's easier to understand. Also certain steps, like the 6th and 7th, have very little information in the Big Book, so the 12&12 is great to expand on those. I have the kindle version and a hard copy of the book. Most of the time I use my hard copy of it but it's nice being able to also access the book anytime anyplace on the Kindle app on my phone.

I would recommend this for everyone, not just an alcoholic or person in AA. If you, or someone you know has an alcohol problem or you arent familar with the 12 steps, read the 'Big Book' first. You will gain knowledge and an understanding of alcoholism and what the 12 steps are intended to do.This book provides further details abouts the 12 steps., and is always a good book to reread. The more you do, the more you uncover about the 12 steps and 12 traditions.

Don't be fooled by the title of this e-book, which is clearly designed to give the impression that you're getting both the big book and the twelve and twelve. This is not the case. It's just the big book. Don't make the same mistake I did.

This book is a life saver it has taught me a new way fo life . I no longer obsess over drinking . It has taught me how to live a better life free from addiction . I feel this book can be used well by others with other addictions this is the book thats the back bone of all 12 step programs . If you are truely willing, and have gotten extremly honest with yourself this might be the book that ends your addiction problems if you do exactly what it says . If you honestly work the steps with a sponsor you can dramatically change your life and find a new way to live . I bought it for my Kindle fire hd 8 it works great I also have a soft cover version any time I need inspireation and when Im on the road with my tablet I will open it up and find the direction and relief I so need at times . This book has changed me in ways no other book ever has . If you deal with addiction this might be the book that saves your life .

Clearly, not every one will appreciate this book. But, if you are looking for a simple guide book for a way of living life,then it is extremely accessible and very plainly written. AA has saved many lives and yet remains a program of recoverythat is based upon attraction rather than promotion. As a cynical, agnostic, and unsociable human being with no realbelief system, this book transformed my life. This book is not so much about abstaining from alcohol as it is about how tolive among, and be a positive contributor, to a society of people.

The Big Book is used kind of like a Bible. It is studied by AA adherents and sections of it are often read in meetings. AA members read it over and over, and not usually starting at the beginning. This version is only usable to read the Big Book like a novel, page 1 first and then each successive page thereafter. The pages are not numbered, and you have to start at the beginning each time you open the book. I'm deleting it; it's not worth the space it takes up on my phone. One star is too much.
