Interesting but small book. There are diagrams and photos of many bridges from many parts of the world, including China, Australia, Europe and US. There is attention for the principles involved, the builders, the disasters, the future and the past. The photos are in colour and generally sunny. This is a small book: 6.5" by 5.5", and thoroughly enjoyable.

I'm not an engineer or architect, but I live in San Francisco and my extended family live in New York City, both cities where bridges are a part of daily life as well as civic identity and pride. I loved this book! It's definitely set up for browsing, and it's obviously aimed at a lay reader.The first part of the book discusses the basic categories of bridges, explaining how they span and support. The second part offers succinct case studies of specific bridges around the world, arranged by type of bridge (suspension, trestle, etc.). It uses photographs to convey grandeur and smaller diagrams to explain engineering concepts.As someone who struggled in physics class, I appreciated the simple breakdown of engineering terms and the basic discussions of force and form. Yeah it's a little repetitive, but if anything, this helps reinforce how very basic structural concepts have been reinterpreted through the ages, around the world. I think it'd be great to give as a gift to someone who travels a lot, as it's an interesting way to understand the geography and aesthetic of a specific city.The previous reviewer who gave this book only one star is unreasonably harsh and is using entirely unhelpful criteria. More importantly, he's conveying an inaccurate impression of the book. I bought this book along with "How to Read Buildings" and thought this one much, much more global in feel, with abundant examples from ancient and modern Asia along with Latin American countries. The building book was virtually all European in its history and examples.In short, a small and friendly book that's a great introduction to how important bridges are, how challenging they're to design and build, and how beautiful these workhorses can be.

Marc Sabatella is a pianist, composer, educator, and software developer based in Denver, Colorado (USA). Music notation programs are by necessity fairly complex. MuseScore is a user supported program that directly competes with some rather expensive professional products. My needs were such that paying for and keeping a commercial product current was not a viable option. I discovered MuseScore in its earlier 1.x version and was immensely pleased with the upgrade to 2.x. The old documentation was so-so (for version 1.x) but barely adequate. (It could be viewed online or downloaded as a PDF.) Note: I did have some previous experience with a commercial notation program about a decade back... but keeping it current (as the computer OS was upgraded) was not cost effective for my needs.)Version 2 of MuseScore is a much more polished program. The online instructions/reference manual are far more polished than the 1.x version... it is accessed through a browser -- and can be downloaded as a PDF. The online reference manual is a bit terse at times, making it necessary to experiment a bit to "get" how a feature works.The book is a well thought out explanation of the program -- it's independently produced and has about double the page count of the online instructions. It has numerous screen grabs as illustrations. (Minor gripe is that they're from a Windows computer and look clunky compared to the windows on a Mac.) Each chapter had a brief chart of the functions (and related commands) covered therein. Obviously with a book, you can place sticky notes -- and even keep a couple of fingers in the book so you can flip back and forth between relevant sections as you work on a notation project. (Once you're more experienced with the program, the need to have the reference manual at had will be reduced -- but there are many features that one might not encounter frequently, and having a reference manual is a big help

This is an excellent book to get the most out of MuseScore, which is an amazing piece of music notation software. Especially with the release of version 2 of MuseScore the program took a great leap in complexity so a book like this is a great adjunct to the online help that is built-in to the program. Marc has taken great pains to lay this book out in an orderly fashion so that anybody new to MuseScore, whether brand new to computer music notation software or moving over from some other program like Finale or Sibelius. Part of the price of this book helps to underwrite the continued development of the software, which is a great thing. I've been a long-time user of both Finale and Sibelius and I love MuseScore and recommend it to all my students and anybody who asks for a recommendation. And I will start suggesting that they all buy this book, too!

I love this book...MuseScore is a marvellous free program for composing or transposing music. I play recorders, particularly a bass recorder and I like the sound of the bass, but with much music written for soprano or alto recorder, requires mental gymnastics to play as written in the treble clef when one is used to music written on the bass clef staff, and MuseScore enables easy transposing of treble clef music into the bass clef. In any event, the MuseScore program has a million and one ways one can do all kinds of things, and this book, "Mastering MuseScore..." clearly and accurately defines what you can do with the program, and the various ways in which you can do it. If one is going to use MuseScore to write and print music, this book is a must-have for information and consultation when one wants to do something but doesn't quite yet know how. It covers all the bases.

MuseScore 2.3 isa free and open-source music notation program for Windows, Mac OS, and Linux. It explores the process of note entry and editing including chord symbols, slash notation,time signatures, repeats, tablature, hidden items and more.. It is easy to read and follow, and I've always had good luck looking something up when I have come to a dead-end trying to figure out one of the more esoteric features of Musescore 2.3. Lots of illustrations are included for ease of use. MASTERING MUSESCORE is everything I needed to find out about the inner workings of using MuseScore, which is so powerful that many features may be overlooked without a good book like this. Musescore is free music notation software, but I'm so glad I bought the book, so I can master it. Literally.

Learning MuseScore hasn't been easy for me. The online FAQ or "manual" leaves a lot to be desired. Enter the Mastering MuseScore book! Wow! What a difference. Search the topical index in the back of the book and go to the page(s) that tell you what you need to know. A simple concept that worked for decades and in this case, much better than online. I'm just a beginner and this book has saved me much frustration. I highly recommend it, especially if you are just getting started. Kudos to the authors!

The MuseScore program is free, but learning how to use it is challenging. That's not due to deficiencies in the program design, but because music notation is inherently pretty complicated, and it takes some time to figure out which options work best for the particular score you're trying to create. This manual makes it easier -- and purchases help support a wonderful open-source project.

I have been using MuseScore for about a year now. It is a wonderful program. This book will help me get to the next level in composition and providing beautiful scores. This complete book of MuseScoreology leaves no stone unturned. If you have questions, this book will provide the answers. Great job Marc!!

Musecore is relatively easy to use and the book is absolutely invaluable. I use Musescore almost every day to create singing version of songs - in midi format - so I can practice the piano accompaniment, I do the same with cello duets - once again so I can practice the cello accompaniment. And for my Rounds & Canons group I can send out our songs in PDF format and also create MP3 files by first exporting the Musecore song in midi format and then using GarageBand to convert the midi file to an MP3 file. Love Musecore!

This book is described as a "bold and stirring vision" for the church, and having read it, I agree.The content of it is pretty broad, ranging from the nature of Christians relationships to each other to the order of the Lord's day meeting. I really appreciated his chapters on "The church family as a strong-group", and "Discipleship as intensive companionship". There are also a number of doctrines brought out, and for each of these the author lays out a pretty tight case. In the course of doing this, he brings out some insights that I hadn't heard or considered before. In spite of his extensive research, which is apparent from the footnotes, the author maintains, and calls us, to a child-like acceptance of Jesus' words.Perhaps you could come to these conclusions yourself by diligent bible study, but it sure is encouraging to read from other like-minded souls who are seeking for God's will to be done in everything relating to the church. Today, so many people are disillusioned with the church, and have come to see it as an institution of men, because our inventions have grown to such a number, and are found in every church.Prov 29:18 (NASB) tells us, "Where there is no vision, the people are unrestrained, but happy is he who keeps the law.".I believe this book is full of the kind of vision it speaks of here, revelation of God's word to us, so we can uphold the law of Christ today. I've already bought a batch of these books, and handed some out; hoping that we can catch this vision!

He aims to be Biblical and bring the Church back to its Apostolic roots. In an age of compromise and secularism, every devout Christian should read this book with an open mind and discerning spirit.

I really appreciated this book by Finny Kuruvilla as he systematically laid out a clear and powerful vision for the Church, the Ekklesia to live by and follow. I also appreciated his introduction which laid out why we should say King Jesus today instead of Jesus Christ! I was very glad to meet Finny earlier this year at a conference and talk to him about a few of his thoughts in these books especially on the Regulative Principle. If you want to read a book that exalts King Jesus, the church of Jesus Christ, and the historical teachings of the Church, you will definitely want to read this book. Yet, if you want to continue living a nominal evangelical american christian life that has no power, then don't dare pick up this book because it will challenge you to live only for King Jesus and His followers. I don't know if I've ever read a better book about the Church!

I found this book in a Barnes and Noble and was intrigued by the cover art. I've looked at other books from No Starch Press aimed at children and thought, hey, these are approachable. I like that this book drives hard at taking all the basic skills and building them into something really impressive. Other books can teach you to build hangman or snake, but this thing gives you the tools to go on and make something that is completely your own while resembling video games of the 16 bit era.I know next to nothing about coding, but this book helped without being condescending. The format for most of the skills are:1) Type this thing2) Let's take a deep look into what each of those lines actually does3) Now try to modify it on your ownCan I just say this book makes me feel like I'm actually capable of coding a fully working game? Buy it now, share with friends, you won't regret it!OH! Last thing! The publisher provides all the sweet pixel art and sound effects you'll need to put this thing together. I swear, if you like Lego kits, this is the Lego kit of coding books!

Mission Python exceeded my expectations. I was expecting a reference containing program examples of how to do game-like things, but found a complete exercise of all the components required to make a functioning game.In typical No Starch publishing style, Mission Python is a well documented, colorful, and engaging publication with little to criticize. The author provides all program listings, graphic and sound resources comprising the collateral support resources that are necessary for a professional software production. Every iteration of the project development is documented line-by-line. This is not a programming tutorial, but an example a user can follow to cut-and-paste, modify, and customize. I completed this book cover-to-cover and found sufficient latitude to adapt the game to my rudimentary gaming skills. I had complete freedom to change things.The only small learning bump I encountered was transitioning between the Python IDE (Integrated Development Environment) and the Pygame Zero run-time system that actually launches the program. I completed the entire project using the newly released Raspberry Pi 3 Model A+, which is very inexpensive, works great, and very easy to use. To quote the author, “If you’re using a Raspberry Pi, Python and Pygame Zero are already installed.” Windows and Macintosh take a bit of tweaking.Mission Python offers a level of depth and sophistication from a programmatic perspective. Great care has been taken to organize, comment, and name functions and variables clearly. All audio and graphic resources are clearly labeled and accessible. The project is entirely organized using Python Lists and Dictionary data structures, which are features I find when working with Internet based systems making web based applications. Learning what Mission Python teaches, explains much about how more complex systems work. That’s very good.Finally, I purchase much from Amazon directly, but when it comes to No Starch Publications, I usually buy directly from the publisher. No Starch generally offers bundles that include not only hard copy, but ALL the major soft copy formats with no DRM (Digital Rights Management). This is extremely useful with programming publications where being able to copy complex code sequences directly from the book to the an IDE is a vital learning feature.I gave a copy of Mission Python to my eleven year old grandson to play with so we could do something together during the Christmas holidays. He had the book for about 3 weeks. When we arrived, I found he was finishing chapter 5. That is a huge endorsement for this work. I had a good time too, and I’m not eleven.

Mission Python by Sean McManus is a must read for people who want to learn Python. The fact that you can create an Adventure Game while learning is an added bonus.Sean's style is clear and the book is formatted really well which is important because the book is so densely packed with information and every resource needed. The presentation is systematic but never boring.I worked through the book with my 9 and 7 year olds and although at lot of it was above them they responded well to the images and clear diagrams in the book and the book helped me understand concepts and ideas so I could then distill it for my children. They are inspired to keep learning, programming and creating games.No starch press is one of our favourite publishers for tech and science related books and they have another winner with Mission Python.

I saw this book looking at Barns and Noble and thought this would be a good hobby. I never wrote any code or knew the first thing about it. All I knew is that the game you make looked cool and it was something to do at the end of the day.This book takes you step by step learning how to create every part of a game and what each piece of code means as you input it. So far the book has left nothing out in the explanation so I feel like I'm not just writing code but understanding what it does. This book is fantastic for beginers, people wanting to refresh their python skills, or people that just want a new hobby.One of best parts to me while learning this was when I got stuck. there was an area I could not get my code to work no matter how hard I tried. after hours of getting nowhere I emailed the author thinking I would not get a reply back. After less then 24 hours he emailed me back with the solution to my problem.I'm so happy I bought this book and I honestly cant recommend this more!
