Rabbi Adin Steinsaltz is a Talmudic scholar with a real knack for rendering complex Kabbalistic concepts understandable. Although I have really just begun this study, I recommend his work, among with that of others such as Daniel Matt, to anyone with an interest in Kabbalah.The Thirteen Petalled Rose is a relatively short book of just under 200 pages. It's content is divided into ten sections: Worlds, Divine Manifestation, The Soul Man, Holiness, Torah, The Way of Choice, The Human Image, Repentance, The Search for Oneself, and Mitzvot (commandments). While all of this information was wonderful, I found the author's presentation of the four worlds especially compelling.Traditional Kabbalistic sources describe four known spiritual realms called, from higher to lower, Atzilut (emanation), Beriah (creation), Yetzirah (formation) and Assiyah (action). Steinsaltz expands on these traditional divisions quite clearly noting that there are many levels within each of the known spiritual realms as well as other lower realms not thought of as part of the four worlds as listed above.Steinsaltz begins with our world, the world of action, explaining that this observed world is a part of a vast array of worlds, most of which are spiritual. He points out that these worlds do not exist somewhere else but in another dimension and describes a dynamic relationship between worlds with a very real exchange of influence occurring. He stresses that occurrences in our world impact on other worlds and can affect significant change in the spiritual realms. I could not agree more.The author works through each of the spiritual dimensions in highly coherent way explaining concepts and terminology in original and insightful ways. He explains, 'higher' and 'lower' worlds (for example) in terms of 'nearer' and 'farther' or degrees of 'transparency' to the divine light. And tells us that, as one descends through the worlds materiality becomes greater and a sense of independence is felt with an ever increasing intensity. This blocks the divine light and obscures, per the author, the unchanging essence that lurks beneath the personality.I find Steinsaltz's understanding of divinity, angels, humans and the reality we inhabit impressive. I imagine a reality of not four but almost innumerable levels with good deeds and sacred actions radiating upward and outward, expanding and elevating, and ultimately touching the divinity to which we are all connected.I feel that I have come away from this reading with a clearer understanding of the nature of spiritual beings and the very fundamental differences between angels and man. Additionally I found the text validating on a personal level as it is my deep-seated belief that there are many largely imperceptible dimensions beyond our own limited understanding of what is. I am Catholic but I will tell you now that this work is a masterpiece in new wave thinking. There are areas that just blow your mind and stretch your thinking to a new level. The Rabbi has surely written an inspired work that offers good meat for those hungry for spiritual food.My own philosophy allows me to treat this work with an open mind, and an open mind brings fresh air!

That book was a compilation of conversations the author had with the rabbi.. easily accessible ideas, philosophies and entertaining, too. For decades, economic scholars have commented on the dangers inherent in the growing concentration of wealth in Western society. Though misleadingly referred to as “income inequality” in the new media, this critically important topic actively entered public debate in 2011 with Occupy Wall Street. Nobel Prize-winning economists Joseph Stiglitz and Paul Krugman and others added to the debate in the years that followed. Then, Senator Bernie Sanders flogged the issue at every opportunity in his presidential race in 2016, giving the issue further prominence. If there’s anyone alive and alert in America today who isn’t aware that the concentration of wealth is a growing problem for our society, I’d be surprised.Few contemporary American observers have a clearer-headed understanding of the issue and its causes than Noam Chomsky. Chomsky, born in 1928, is widely regarded as the father of modern linguistics and one of the founders of the field of cognitive science. He’s also well known—some might say notorious—as an activist and social commentator. He has written dozens of books on the technical aspects of his academic work, and even more on politics. But his latest, Requiem for the American Dream: The 10 Principles of Concentration of Wealth & Power, is not a book he wrote.Instead, the book was distilled from a 2015 film of the same name, a documentary patched together using interviews filmed over four years with Chomsky. Unlike the books he has written, most of which are slow going and many (the texts on linguistics, impenetrable), Requiem consists entirely of transcriptions from the spoken word. The style is conversational and uses only a bare minimum of jargon. It’s a quick read, and an enlightening one.As Chomsky notes, “Power has become so concentrated that not only are the banks ‘too big to fail,’ but as one economist put it, they are also ‘too big to jail.'” Given our experience over the past decade, it would be difficult to argue with that. And anyone who closely follows events in American society today would say the same about this observation by Chomsky: “the rich and powerful, they don’t want a capitalist system. They want to be able to run to the ‘nanny state’ as soon as they’re in trouble, and get bailed out by the taxpayer.” If the American people fully understood how much tax money is funneled to corporations as subsidies, and how much the tax code has been distorted to favor them and their shareholders, they would storm Washington DC by the millions.In Requiem, Chomsky presents ten “principles” that together explain how the massive concentration of wealth in America today has come about. (His analysis applies to other wealthy countries as well, but it fits the U.S. best.) His argument is best summed up as what he calls a vicious circle: “Concentration of wealth yields concentration of power, particularly so as the cost of elections skyrockets, which forces the political parties even more deeply into the pockets of major corporations.”The 10 principles underlying this reality, as Chomsky sees them, are: Reduce Democracy Shape Ideology Redesign the Economy Shift the Burden Attack Solidarity Run the Regulators Engineer Elections Keep the Rabble in Line Manufacture Consent Marginalize the PopulationI’ve never seen a more comprehensive or economical explanation of how wealth has come to be so concentrated in so few hands in the U.S. today. Most of these principles are self-evident at a glance. Only two may require explanation. Chomsky uses the word “solidarity” as a synonym for empathy, caring for others, or “concern for your fellow man,” to cite another archaic expression. His Principle #8, “Keep the Rabble in Line,” refers to the coordinated 45-year effort by Big Business and Right-Wing ideologues to destroy the labor movement.The editors of Requiem—Peter Hutchison, Kelly Nyks, and Jared P. Scott—have interspersed short passages from other sources among the 10 Principles. The sources range over the centuries: from Aristotle and James Madison to Harry Truman and Martin Luther King Jr. These short excerpts from classic documents, speeches, press reports, and social commentaries add depth to the book’s presentation and enhance understanding of Chomsky’s message.Chomsky’s views have often been regarded as extreme. Certainly, he is vilified by commentators and scholars on the Right. But if you read Requiem for the American Dream, I think you’ll find his reading of history is accurate, his logic is sound, and his view of America today is—sadly—right on target.

The parties are dominated by special interest and business lobbies shape policy and our political talking points.Which brings me to another point which he outlines very well. The current Republican party would not have been a party at all in 1971. They would be off either party’s charts in 1971. An extremists group that wouldn’t have even make a blip on the political radar. Nixon policies on the other hand, were far left of the modern Democrat.Today we have a majority of Democrats that consider themselves centrists but would have been Republicans in 1971 by most policies. Call them Reagan Democrats or Rockefeller Republicans, but it’s resulted in policy paralysis for the working and poor and accelerated the wealth of the masters of society and business.Noam keeps the paragraphs short, tries not to use too many 5 cent words, and assembled a lot of great observations and information in 10 short paragraphs. I have yet to watch the movie, but the book cut straight to the heart of the matter. He doesn’t pull any punches and he offers the straight scoop on wealth concentration, social imbalance and the impacts it has on our society.The positive thing I take from the book is that this is a political problem, which means there is a political solution. The majority of Americans agree on a lot of principal matters that would result in a lot more prosperous healthy lives for the most of society. When things get this far out of balance, historically the public has pressured the governments and businesses to make concessions such as in the New Deal. It's up to us to organize and sustain grass roots pressure to shape policy.We the people, can overcome the power of money but we need to act urgently and work together for grass roots change. Sustained pressure from a small but persistent and patient group of citizens. That’s what Noam emphasizes has resulted in the freedoms we have won in the past.

Great and added to my classroom library.

I enjoy learning and wanted to know more about Icebergs and Glaciers and this book gives me a good understanding without having to get into technical reading. This wonderful earth we live in gives us many areas to discover and this was one that I wanted to know more about.

this is almost a children's book so if you are looking for science of any depth, this is not the book.

As with all Seymour's books the highlight of this book is the awesome photography. Each page has huge, beautiful photographs; some close-ups, some taken at strange angles, all with an artist flare to accentuate the beauty and wonder of the topic. The text is written in large bold text so as not to intimidate young readers, though the text itself is not simple. Told in a straight-forward, matter of fact voice, the writing is not entirely engaging yet does not become dry. Fortunately the photographs keep the reader stimulated.

Wouldn't it be interesting to know how Simon works? Does he accumulate all the photographs he wants, then write the text for his science books? Or, does he write his text, then collect photos? The reader knows that the photos are not his because he gives credit to the photographers on the verso/copyright page.Also on the verso page, the Library of Congress summarizes the book: "Discusses the formation, movement, and different types of glaciers and icebergs, and describes their effect on the world around them." Yes, Simon does, he does exactly that, but in a much friendlier voice.On page 3 (page 2 being a full-page photo of Antartica at midnight in the middle of summer), Simon begins: "For most of us, spring means the return of warm weather." He describes the thawing process, where it is cold and icy and snow-covered in the world, defines "snow line," then concludes the page with: "It is in the constantly cold lands and above the snow line that glaciers are born." Does it give you chill bumps?Simon's development of ideas and writing skills are finely crafted together, orderly, logically, using vocabulary conducive to understanding. Amazon's description of the book rates it for ages 4-8, an obviously inaccurate assessment. Simon's books like these are more for ages 8-12 (or above or below depending on interest). Orderly means beginning with snowflakes, on to blue ice and solid ice, then an ice field sixty feet deep. "Then something strange happens. The huge mass of ice begins to move" (p. 6) and an explanation of sliding on melt water or creeping glaciers. Fast glaciers, slow glaciers, dangers of crevices, devastation of glaciers, rock flour, moraines, avalanches, and that's just half of the 42-page book.I like my mind boggled from time to time. How are these facts for mind-boggling? The largest glacier in Antartica is larger than the United States, Mexico, and Central America combined. The depth of this ice sheet is 15,000 feet, or ten Empire State Buildings stacked one on top of the other.Simon nearly always concludes with ecology in the forefront of our minds. He describes the effects of glaciers on the earth in the four to ten ice ages since the beginning of the earth. He concludes with the overall effect of global warming--and this was written in 1987 when we were just beginning to become concerned. My goodness, what would he say now?This book is highly recommended for school library collections and parents who want their children to know about our planet Earth. After all, we all live here.

Beautiful photographs and the text is informative. The reading level is about 6th grade level and the interest level is 3rd through 6th.

Icebergs are the chunks which broke off from the high glaciers and gloat out to sea.Pack Ice is composed totally of saltwater and composes ninety-five percent of the ice found in the oceans of th polar regions. Pack ice drifts on the surface of the sea and a single piece is known as a floe. On the beaches there are hugh mounds of saltwater ice joined to freshwater ice. It is thought that the Artic winds push the pack ine to the shore where it gets contained. Though the ocean and the seas are made up of saltwater, the icebergs and glaciers are composed of freshwater ice. An amazing phenonomon from Mother Nature.

I'm about a third of the way in and I will come back and update the review when finished. I can tell its a good book when I use the highlighter a lot in my Kindle. Good material on the value of architectural thinking to support strategy. 4 stars right now but if it continues strong, it could go to 5.

I teach technology management courses and this book has enough ideas to power an entire semester. What I love is that the patterns go from the top level (business model) to the bottom (non-functional requirements). They are all linked together in a clear pathway. Then, this book does something I've never seen before - it tells the architect how to communicate the information to the executives and to the technical team. Eminently practical advice. Wow.

The book fills an important niche that's missed by most business or IT books: how to apply structured thinking to linking the business environment to an IT architecture. The book is less about "patterns" in the strict sense (which the author readily admits), but more like a tool box for folks engaging in defining a technology strategy. Many of the tools harvest from existing management consulting techniques with ample use of 2-by-2 matrices (which never fail when speaking to management): RACI, SWOT, Bubble charts, Growth Matrix, etc.The best way to position the book is given in the front preface: Eben's alternate title is "How to become the CTO" and he considers the book an intellectual memoir of his experience as a CTO.The author clearly draws from extensive experience in this area, which is why i wish that he had included more anecdotes or practical examples in the book to bring the techniques to life. On the upside, Eben stay's (largely) clear of traditional frameworks such as TOGAF, Zachman, and co.Overall a quick initial read that you may come back to several times.

Whenever you have a class that is on a topic Chemerinsky has written a treatise on, YOU NEED TO BUY THE TREATISE! The only reason I got an A in Con law, after totally bombing my outline and group study sessions, was because Chemerinsky wrote a supplement. That supplement is the summation of absolutely everything I needed to know. His Fed. Jurisdiction supplement is turning out to be exactly like that. Don't hesitate. Just buy it and snicker as your classmates struggle. (Actually, don't do that. Don't feed into the law student stereotype.) If it weren't for cold calling, I don't think I'd need my textbook at all.

Taking Fed Courts? Buy this book. Read it. (Do your class reading too, then go here to have it make sense.) Everyone turns to Chemerinsky for Con Law, but I found this book just as useful. It's not going to give you the most intricate, nuanced perspective, but if you're getting lost in the theories and need to take a step back and put everything in (accurate) context and add some broader insight, use this book.

I use Chemerinsky in my law class more than the required Low, Jeffries 8th Ed. 300.- !!Great Great book, super price and super ship speed.

Only when a scholar knows the material intimately and in it full context can that scholar reveal such simple unvaried truths about the topic that those truths can answer any students questions on the topic. Prof. C does this on every topic and subtopic in Federal Jurisdiction. Prof.C is a genius; he should be at USC, Standford, or Yale.

Excellent resource at a reasonable price!

This book is great supplement to a federal courts class or casebook. It explains topics nicely. Moreover, it covered the cases that were included in the casebook. I found it very useful!
