It's easy to fall in love with Turkey, and even easier to fall in love with Cappadocia. Over the past ten years, I have visited Turkey many times over the past ten years, leading pilgrimages to Early Christian World sites. I've always found it hard to explain "Why Turkey?" to people who haven't been there; and those who have, do not need to know the answer. Turkish tour guides are wonderful, but they all have their own perspectives and, yes, agenda. Duke Dillard and his family live there and clearly love it. We visitors can profit immensely from an ex-pat's knowledge and perspective. In this book, Duke simply takes us by the hand and accompanies our explorations, pointing out what we might otherwise miss, and sharing the wisdom and practical advice of one who knows the wide-eyed sense of wonder that Cappadocia produces, as well as the know-how needed to navigate in a world that is often strangely different. He writes from an unashamedly Christian perspective, but is not pietistic or heavy-handed, and certainly appreciates the worldly wonders of this magnificent land and its people. While a bit more background on Islam, and especially Sufism and the Whirling Dervishes would be welcome, I really appreciated his inclusion of the three great Cappadocian Fathers (Basil and the two Gregories) and their contribution to our heritage and culture. If you have a visit to Turkey in your future, don't shortcut Cappadocia, the Heartland of Anatolia. If you hadn't thought about traveling to Cappadocia, by all means do if you can. Although Turkish politics is getting dicey, and much of the Middle East is dangerous, Turkey is still at least as safe as the USA. I hope this book can help you fall in love with Cappadocia. It has rekindled my desire to return soon.
Finally getting around to reviewing this ebook. I purchased this after I had already been in Turkey for several weeks, back in September 2017, so I didn't take advantage of any of recommendations for accommodations, dining, entertainment or activities.I certainly enjoyed reading about the first hand stories and experiences the author has included throughout this book, and above all the fact he lives there and continues to provide updates through his online newsletters.If you're planning on going to Cappadocia, or even plan to return there (which I plan to do), this is a great handbook to keep handy on your mobile device. You can know that Mr. Dillard will be able to help answer any questions you might have during your stay with the purchase of this book. This is the only book you'll need while there.
Having lived in Turkey and taken a handful of trips to Cappadocia, I enjoyed reading through this travel guide. At several points, it reminded me of living in this great land! I was particularly impressed with the "off the beaten path" material that you don't receive in most guide books for the country and the multiplicity of options for each location. Most guide books focus on just a few hotels, restaurants, etc. This one goes into several. I'm not the type to jump right into the tour options so I would've enjoyed reading the history up front but that is a minor issue. By and large, this guide book will be a tremendous tool for anyone traveling to the region. I especially enjoyed reading the forward, dedication and acknowledgement sections tapping into my friends family and friends [disclaimer: the author is a good friend of mine]. I commend this book to those of you wanting to go further and learn more about the beautiful region called Cappadocia!
This was truly the ONLY book, reference, info needed for our trip to Cappadocia. It is up to date. Has great info on literally everything and we got a smoking hot deal on a balloon ride when we showed them the book. I only wish I'd found it before I pre-paid our hotel (which was still amazing.) Best of all? the author responds to questions! I love that it's written by someone that actually still lives there, updates it regularly. It directs you to his web page and FB updated with photos and other good stuff almost daily. WE only had 2 days but this version listed everything so I could decide what was most important for me to see. Ended up being darn close to the suggested 2 day itinerary. We took a suggested tour (off the beaten path) and LOVED it. We were the only ones on the tour! I would have never found that and some other gems without this book. I actually wish I could have met the author but thought it rude to ask.
Having traveled to Cappadocia numerous times, I thought I knew most of what this book would tell me. I was wrong! The level of detail here goes beyond any guide for Cappadocia I have ever seen. Not only does the author give basic overviews of all the major sites, it also provides much deeper detail – and makes it uniquely personal, as only a person who lives there could.There is some repetition in the book, but this is because it is laid out in a convenient way that makes it possible for each traveler to choose the section of the book that best fits the experience they are looking for. Cappadocia is truly one of the wonders of the world, in it's history and phenomenal landscape. But, the treasure of this book (in addition to the discounts it provides!) is that it also captures the deep sense of hospitality that anyone discovers in Cappadocia the moment they arrive, and especially when they wander beyond the normal tourist zone. I highly and gladly recommend this book.
You can't find a better resource to help your visit to Cappadocia be authentic, rewarding and fun. Dillard, having lived in the region for many years and having visited, eaten, stayed at so many places in order to give his readers first hand accounts, Mr. Dillard has produced a gem of a guide to the curious traveler who wants to see the real Cappadocia. Ideal combination of insider and guest perspectives.
