The author does seem to have a high level of knowledge and shares good and helpful information. The editing is poor unfortunately.

Full of good information about how your "credit" works and how to make it work for you. I would recommend that everyone read this book, especially those either in need of assistance on how to go about repairing your credit on your own, as well as EVERY young person just starting off with credit. If a book like this was required reading in high school I think young adults would have a much lower chance of falling victim to enticing offers that start them off in unnecessary debt so they can have the best chance at becoming successful when it comes to their finances and credit in the future.I received this product at a discount in exchange for an honest review.

I found the information easy to understand and informative.

Goldman Sachs: The Culture of Success

Amazon.com Review

Goldman Sachs brings you inside the rarefied boardrooms of one of the most secretive Wall Street banking giants. Begun by a German immigrant in the late 1800s as a small family-run business, Goldman Sachs rose to become the world's top investment bank in the 1990s, even without selling stock to the public. It attracted some of the best talent in the business and cultivated an image of superiority and exclusivity. "The Goldman Sachs mystique was born of secrecy and success. Nothing like it exists on Wall Street," writes the author, Lisa Endlich, a former vice president at the firm. But behind that mystique lie tales of being swindled by British media tycoon Robert Maxwell, multimillion-dollar losses on bad trades, and the on-again, off-again attempts to go public. The book begins and ends with the firm's efforts to go public and get greater access to capital. Most other brokerages are already publicly traded, but internecine conflict and financial turmoil always seem to prevent Goldman from joining the action. In September 1998, for instance, Goldman stunned investors when it dropped plans for a stock offering amid a plunge in the market. A management shakeup soon followed. Goldman Sachs is an intriguing history of the company that invented such financial tools as block trading, commercial paper, and risk arbitrage. The book can sometimes be critical, but is largely a favorable portrait by a former employee. --Dan Ring

From Publishers Weekly

Goldman Sachs, in most years the most profitable investment bank in the country, also holds the distinction of being the last major partnership among investment banks on Wall Street with partners earning tens of millions of dollars. In workmanlike prose, former Goldman v-p Endlich traces the bumpy road the company took from its founding in 1885 to its current status as a leader in the financial world. She dutifully reports the major developments in the company's history, such as the rise of Sidney Weinberg, who led Goldman from 1930 to 1969, a period during which the company overcame a tarnished reputation and became a financial powerhouse. The most interesting section of the book deals with the infamous British media tycoon Robert Maxwell and Goldman's role as his principal financial adviser: although the firm was exonerated of any illegal activity with Maxwell and his companies, it took three years to settle the various lawsuits filed against the company. Endlich is the victim of bad timing: her lively account of Goldman management's decision to take the company public in the summer of 1998 is rendered somewhat moot by the fact that those plans were derailed by the sudden (and so far brief) bear market. And although Endlich predicts that Goldman management might revive the IPO under the right market conditions, Goldman suffered one of its worst quarters for the period ended November 30 when profits fell 81%. This is probably one of my favorite books. I've read it several times. The bad reviews do not portray this book accurately and I think it should be rated more highly on Amazon. It is an excellent read for anyone wants to know more about the history and culture of Goldman Sachs. The book is very broad and analyzes the many success and failures of Goldman Sachs from its founding in 1869 up to the IPO in 1999. It does an excellent job of presenting the many challenges that Goldman Sachs faced over the decades and how senior management dealt with those challenges. The book contains a wealth of information regarding Goldman Sachs history as well as some biographical information, which is otherwise difficult to find. What I personally liked most is the highly personal and vivid descriptions the author gives of the senior partners who helped shape Goldman Sachs throughout the decades including the early Goldmans and Saches, Sidney Weinberg, Gus Levy, John Weinberg and John Whitehead, Robert Ruben and Stephen Friedman, Hank Paulson and Jon Corzine, etc.You really get a sense how they think during their tenure at the firm and how they operated the firm.It is one of my favorite books and I highly recommend it.

We all know last year profits at Goldman Sachs and the Big fat bonuses expected for its employees to receive. What is it that these guys do to obtain such level of profits?, well that was the reason to read this book. I never thought this book would be that interesting, the whole history of the Goldman and the Sachs, both jewish immigrants families, and the following consolidation of the firm along the years, its ups and downs, make this book an easy reading. The idea for me was also to understand a little about investment banking and other concepts such as equity trading, long term capital management and others. To tell you the truth, I need further reading but the spark is there and I want to learn more of this subject. I cannot finish this review by saying that also in this book you learn some of the aspects of running this big firm and few lessons of experience by some of the best in this field like Sidney Weinberg and Robert Rubin, both pillars of a company that now may be called a culture of success.

I really wasn't sure what to expect from this book judging by the sub title of this book; "The Culture of Success." I sort of went in expecting something about how Goldman Sachs' culture was superior to others in a very detailed manner. That's really not what this book was; this was basically a pretty broad overview of the Goldman Sachs history. In retrospect I think I preferred it to be the firm's history than what I had initially thought it was would be. It does discuss how important culture was to the firms development though, so that was in the book, but it was more of a historical perspective overall. The author takes you back to the beginning on how the firm began by running promissory notes in the late 1800's in New York. I thought this was fascinating since I knew next to nothing about the firm before delving into this book. Maybe that's why I enjoyed it so much, it was a wealth of new information for me. I thought Lisa Endlich did an excellent job in bringing the reader through the history. She brought us through the firm's humble beginnings all the way to the firms IPO in the late 90's when it was considered one of the most dominant power houses in the financial world. One of the parts that I found to be the most interesting was some of the family history concerning the Goldman's and the Sachs' during the great depression and moving into World War II. The Goldman in one of the top positions at that time was extremely proud of being a German Jew and longed to retire back to Germany. Unfortunately history would not make this a pleasant situation since shortly after he returned to Germany Adolf Hitler was named Der Fuhrer. I couldn't help but feel bad for the man since, from what Lisa reports, he embodied a lot of elements that Hitler would respect in a person. Pride for ones homeland being the primary factor for what is important to Hitler. This is made very clear to anyone who sits down and actually reads "Mein Kampf." Goldman had to return to the U.S. quite disillusioned with everything. For those interested in the history of markets the book also covers the time frame when the American firms tried to enter into the European market and all the difficulty that came from that. In the 1980's there were multiple scandals with traders, some of which hit home to the firm. She brings us through all the agonizing hardships and gives a pretty interesting inside look into the leaders at the time. It was interesting to note that Goldman Sachs was usually one of the last firms to make any move it deemed risky, but would let other firms go in and make mistakes. However, this kind of an attitude would have to change over time as the markets became even more competitive. The book finally closes with the discussions about Goldman Sachs issuing its first IPO (Initial Public Offering). This was a huge thing for a firm that had lasted as long as just a partnership. You get an inside look into the board meetings and what was going through the partners' heads during this major event in the company's life. There isn't as much focus on the technical financial workings of Goldman Sachs, a few figures are quoted here and there. I did find some of the history here interesting, especially about the creation of Block Trading and Hedge Funds. These are things that are used throughout the market place today. However, if you're looking for some deeper financial workings on Goldman Sachs this isn't the book you want to pick up.I thought this was a great read by the time I finished. I found it incredibly fascinating to see this firm develop throughout the years and didn't realize the immense impact it had on the market place. Some of the language use is great because it tells some of the more humorous parts, such as in the 1980's how investment bankers/traders were the most hated people in the country, lower than lawyers! I thought some of these little anecdotes were brilliant to include because it gave a slightly lighter mood to a read that could have been overly dry. I'll admit that this isn't a book that most lay readers will pick up, only those of us who are in the economics, business or investment fields. Sure some lay people may enjoy it, but I can't ignore the fact it's for a fairly specialized audience. I definitely recommend this if you're interested in reading a broad overview of the firm and its history since its inception.

I'm an I-Banker with a regional firm and do some business with Goldman. This is a very dry historical book but it is a subject with which I have knowledge and an interest. I enjoyed this book. For history buffs this is an excellent book giving background of a historical perspective of how this company was initially built on excellent commercial paper execution. Also, their troubles at the 1929 stock crash and the lingering effect on the firm are of interest. This book also does a great job describing the management personalities, what they did well and in some cases the problems they caused. Other significant events covered are the Penn railroad failure and the early 90 red ink from lack of control in proprietary trading. This is/was an excellent firm to analyze as it struggled with its partnership structure before finally relenting to go public in 98. For finance buffs, this is a very worthwhile read.

I purchased this book moments ago, & have already bookmarked 20 recipes I am excited to try very soon!If the author creates a second A/F book, I recommend including photos for each recipe.

I see several recipes I want to try right away. This book seems ideal for a small air fryer or for people who need a recipe smaller than the typical Serves4 amount.

I like 99% of this book. I wished it had more pictures. I was pleasantly pleased to have the charts included.

Got this for $0.99 so no big deal but, recipe after recipe with no picture.

I just read this entire e-book and thoroughly appreciated all the information which provided facts to determine whether I want to purchase an air fryer. Well done!!! Wish I had a hard copy version.

Helps with air fryer

Great cookbook plenty of great recipes.

This was my first air fryer cookbook, and I hope any others I buy will be better than this. While all of the recipes are portioned for two people (which is perfect for my household), many of the recipes use ingredients in a way that would be wasteful (for example, 2 tablespoons of apple pie filling -- I'm not going to open a can of apple pie filling to use 2 T and throw away the rest!).Many of the recipes seem incomplete; I don't know if that was a problem from converting the print version to Kindle, or all editions have this issue. But for example, a good recipe book will, if a pan is required, state at the beginning what size pan is best and how to prepare it. This book NEVER states what size pan to use or how to prepare it. Instead, towards the end, the instructions will say to pour the batter into the prepared pan. Obviously, food will cook much differently in a smaller pan than a larger pan, so knowing the recommended pan size is critical to successful air fry the food.At least one recipe says to cut out four circles of dough, but then you only use two. What are the other two for?The instructions often say to spray the food with olive oil, but nowhere in the text does it say why olive oil, or if other oils can be substituted, or explains whether you should buy an oil spritzer or if the aerosolized oil is OK. Some instructions say to put a parchment liner in the fryer basket, but nowhere in the book does it state whether the liner should only cover the bottom or should extend up the sides. There is a helpful chart at the back with cooking times and temperatures for many foods that is probably the best feature of the cookbook. This book has the potential to be good, but the finished product is not. I hope this was just an oversight of the author/editor/layout person, and that an updated version will be released to fix the oversights.

In that, Rumsey succeeds admirably." ―Science"[An] erudite treatise on how the digitization of archival technology makes it all too easy to rewrite our cultural past." ―Nature "For anyone skeptical about the increasing reliance on digital media, Rumsey eases concern by revisiting information inflations of the past, simultaneously conveying the importance of the issue to a more general readership." ―Publishers Weekly"This book presents a fascinating view into how the mind’s memory functions and all the external devices that complement this aspect of consciousness." ―San Francisco Book Review"Rumsey takes us on a lucid and deeply thought-provoking journey into what makes the human species unique--the capacity to create external memory. This book will change how you think about our collective store of knowledge, and its future." ―Paul Saffo, Consulting Professor, Stanford University School of Engineering"What Oliver Sacks did for the physical mind, Abby Smith Rumsey is doing for our evolving digital mind--making the history and complexity of our collective memory vital to everyone." ―Brewster Kahle, Founder of the Internet Archive"One of the paradoxes of our time is that we live with so much information at our fingertips that we can barely remember anything. How future generations will recall the things that we did and said--if they recall us at all--is the subject of this deeply absorbing book. With the grace and clarity that come from years of reflection, Abby Smith Rumsey illuminates a serious set of problems at the heart of our endlessly self-Googling culture." ―Ted Widmer, former Director and Librarian of the John Carter Brown Library, Brown University"This book is a thoughtful and urgent call to action that is essential reading for all who care about diversity, sustainability, and the advancement of knowledge. Digital memory presents a new challenge; Rumsey provides inspiring insights into the ways in which past challenges have been met and offers a compelling argument to drive the development of new ideas and solutions to this looming threat of inestimable loss." ―Sarah E. Thomas, Vice President for the Harvard Library and University Librarian"'Thoughts that come on doves' feet steer the world,' said Nietzsche. Abby Smith Rumsey’s welcome new book on the importance of digital memory to our shared past--and still more, our shared future--wears its learning and its lessons lightly. But make no mistake. It is a manifesto that comes on doves’ feet, and it comes at a critical juncture, as we begin to envision the memory systems that will be in place ‘when we are no more.’" ―Max Marmor, President, Samuel H. Kress Foundation"As pixels fly by on our multiplying screens, Rumsey reminds us that we have unwittingly committed our modern forms of expression to formats that are all too fragile, dependent on hardware and software that quickly become dated and unusable. With a kaleidoscopic view of history--from Sumerian tablets to the libraries of Montaigne and Jefferson--and a critical analysis of how our minds use recorded information, she warns us that without devoting more attention to digital preservation we will end up with a cultural disorder akin to Alzheimer's, where we live in a troubling, constant present, with little ability to imagine the future. Ensuring perpetual access to our shared culture is one of the most pressing issues of our digital age, and this compelling, important book is a call and plan for doing so." ―Dan Cohen, Founding Director, Digital Public Library of America"Abby Smith Rumsey’s excellent When We Are No More takes a . . . long view of our contemporary anxieties over knowledge preservation . . . Her book is especially good at charting the changing shape of the institutions to which we have entrusted (or outsourced) our collective memory." ―Wall Street Journal"In a fascinating, out-of-the-box rumination on the digital age, Abby Smith Rumsey worries that the information monopolists of our day - Google and Facebook - might end up fostering a monoculture not unlike the Christian rulers and Islamic caliphate that purged pagan texts from the Great Library of Alexandria in ancient times." - WorldPost

This book is a very compelling tour through our memories and their development over time. The use of Montaigne and Jefferson are two of the references that I greatly value. Now, at this digital era, it is going to be extremely difficult to save and preserve our memories and history for the future. I am working on my family history, going through hundreds of hand-written letters from 60+ years ago. The letters and saved paper documents and thousands of printed photographs lead to my learning a tremendous amount about various people. How will future generations learn about the current families and culture? There are no letters, very few saved texts or emails, and digital photos that might show up in a message and then go away. This is a book that is well written and timely - one that I will try to read again to better comprehend the past and the future situation.

I very much enjoyed this thought-provoking book about the fragility of memory and its importance in how our civilization works. Ms. Rumsey is a cogent writer who is concerned with the avalanche of new information coming at us ever faster as digital; communication becomes more widespread and mankind becomes ever more connected and informed. She points out that this has happened before (invention of writing, The Rennaisance, movable type, The Enlightenment) but the memory was always recorded on an object (stone, papyrus, paper, canvas) and the object was readable by the human eye and was preserved. Now we record data in a cloud, in bits, that can only be retrieved by machines that have energy to run them. And she discusses how important memory is: it defines us; it provides food for our imagination, so we can imagine the future and situate ourselves in time and space. (See Harari) In the course of the book Ms. Rumsey referee to the work of Daniel Kahneman, quotes Mike Gazzaniga, and covers territory discussed by Dan Levitin & Yuval Harari so that we follow the path of concern from Neuroscience to Memory (physical & emotional) to Culture to Imagination. Along the way, she warns against Google's private dominance of memory and the resulting unreliability of free access, and she touts the model of Brewster Kahle's Internet Archive for its role in preservation and freedom of access. Rumsey is also excellent in ruminating on the concept of "materiality" - the process by which mankind learned to find history written in the stars, in the earth, in plants and in our genes. Our history is recorded in and on physical things which allows us to no longer rely on gods and magic to explain our world - a major step in the education of our species (see Bacon, Montaigne.) Thoroughly engaging, stimulating and enjoyable!

This is a powerful book, a must-read for anyone who cares about our digital future. Abby Rumsey's prose is utterly compelling, and her thought even more so. There is something to enlighten or to provoke serious thinking on nearly every page.

Abby Rumsey is smart as a whip and a joy to read. The thesis is both original and a revelation about a topic as old as Plato: the role of human memory. With intellectual verve and rhetorical dexterity, Rumsey manages to remind us that recording human deeds, thoughts, and imagining is at once a corner stone of culture while (as she shows us) a major component of how technology has changed our thinking as well as our culture.

I was expecting more "solutions" to this important issue.A lot of the text goes back in history to show the evolution on how we recorded events.A relatively small portion is dedicated to 'today'.

A little technical for me but I really enjoyed the book. A great message though for those of us who are into historical preservation of family history.

I selected "When We Are No More" for a librarians' book group this summer after reading Rumsey's article, "The Risk of Digital Oblivion" in The Chronicle of Higher Education. I thought the article brought up some interesting ideas and that her new book would be good for discussion. It was, although not quite in the ways I'd hoped. The organization is not what I expected; it takes what appear to be random and erratic tangents into anecdotes about historical figures that are never tied back into the main themes. In particular, Thomas Jefferson makes numerous appearances, but no one in our group could figure out why by the end of the book. While I respect Rumsey's efforts to take a cross-disciplinary approach, I am not confident in her expertise in most of the fields she touches on. She makes sweeping states to support her conclusions (often in combination with the use of the royal "we") some of which are questionable, and some of which are factually inaccurate. As an example of a questionable statement, she informs us "today we see books as natural facts. We do not see them as memory machines with lives of their own, though that is exactly what they are." (p. 177). Whoever her "we" is, it often excludes me. In an example of factual inaccuracy, she states that "the moral is that in Nature, more is better than less" (p. 162) to support her argument that data should be stored redundantly. Life uses a plethora of evolutionary strategies; our own species is a case against her point of "more is better than less" since we spend extensive resources raising, protecting, and teaching our comparatively few offspring.Rumsey is also dismissive of the technical underpinnings of her arguments: "Solving search across so much information will also be nontrivial, as computer engineers are fond of saying. But these are technical matters, no matter how complicated" (p. 167). She seems to be making the assumption that all technical matters are inherently solvable, which is not an assumption I am comfortable making."Memory is about the future, not the past", states the jacket, and so she reiterates throughout the text. It's an argument I was very curious to see explored, and yet no clearer on the idea by the end then at the beginning. In fact, we spent most of our discussion time trying to follow the logical leaps and conceptual hops Rumsey makes throughout the text. Several people mentioned that it seemed like the book was rushed to press, and that it needed a good editor. One person attempting to integrate as many disciplines and concepts as Rumsey tackles is a Herculean task, and she is not Hercules. Perhaps this very interesting idea for a book would be better explored in a series of essays by individual subject matter experts. "When We Are No More" touches on a lot of interesting ideas, concepts, and fields, but does not connect them into a cohesive whole.
