Amazon.com Review

What would you do if your teacher told you to stop using the word "nice" so much? If you had the Scholastic Children's Thesaurus, you'd flip through it until you found "nice" between "new" and "noise." Then you'd find your options: "pleasant," "agreeable," "good-natured," "delightful," and "fantastic" (defined as "extremely nice or good!"). Nearby, a color bar warns, "Nice is a very general word to describe someone you like or something that makes you feel good, but it is not very specific. Be careful not to overuse it. Often a stronger or more specific word is better." At this point, you might be rolling your eyes because your teacher already said all that, but you'll be a more pleasant, agreeable, good-natured, delightful, and fantastic writer for your efforts! John K. Bollard's thesaurus, playfully illustrated by Mike Reed, contains more than 500 main "headwords" and 2,500 synonyms, but if you can't find the word you're looking for--"energetic," for example--you can flip to the index in the back where you'll find "Energetic--See Lively." Lively leads you to "active," "energetic," and "vigorous." All synonyms include a definition as well as one or more sample sentences. This fine thesaurus--paired with the Scholastic Children's Dictionary--will help any young writer make appropriate word choices, think more critically about language, and therefore proceed to the head of the class! Grade 4-7?This accessible thesaurus will foster an appreciation for and broaden knowledge of language, stimulate the development of writing skills, and assist in the expression of ideas in a lucid and precise fashion. An introduction that explains how to use this resource is followed by more than 500 alphabetically arranged entries. Each one contains a headword printed in green capital letters, names its part of speech, and presents a group of synonyms that "progress from the more common or familiar terms to the less common or more sophisticated vocabulary." Succinct definitions and example sentences are provided for all of the words in the entry, helping students to make appropriate choices for writing assignments. See references guide readers to additional synonyms. An index includes all of the headwords and synonyms in the work, and provides antonyms to many of the headwords. Liberally interspersed with colorful illustrations, the layout is clean and readable. This volume serves as an excellent gateway to thesaurus use; however, as its scope is limited, it is recommended only for circulation or as a supplementary purchase. Roget's Children's Thesaurus (HarperCollins, 1994) offers an uncluttered layout, a word list composed of over 1000 terms, and colorful pictorial matter.?Hillary Jan Donitz-Goldstein, New York Public LibraryCopyright 1999 Reed Business Information, Inc.

My students love having access to a thesaurus. This one doesn’t seem to have many words inside though. For example we looked up baby and it wasn’t there so we had to think of synonyms to look up before we could use the book for synonyms. We ended up looking up child and it had baby as a synonym.

My daughter is going to first grade and started using this, however i don't see most of the simple words taught in first grade. It's not worth buying for Kinder/First grader.

I don't use it as reference to look-up synonyms. That can easily be done online or by using a more comprehensive thesaurus. I asked my 7-year old daughter to read the book entry by entry to expand her writing vocabulary. She already knows most of the words. Now she has an aid to organize and learn the nuance of the words, as each synonym also comes with its own explanation. On the other hand, many other thesauruses only list synomyms without any explanation. With each root word, there are only a few synonyms, so it's not overwhelming and perfect for browsing without getting tired quickly.

Wish I could return this book! Def not what I was expecting or needing! My daughters are in 3rd and 4th grade and this is more for a 1st grader! Absolutely no use to us whatsoever! Very few words in this book. Need a real thesaurus!

These are a good level for my Firsties. We have fun making a game looking for "juicy" words! Another good tool for teaching the abc order concepts, also. Public school had torn and tattered books, so I bought my own set!

Its a must book for any pre-k/k/1/2 graders (your mileage can vary). However, it is up to you, parents, to have your kids to use this book. If your precious asks you for a word definition - don't just tell them, send them to look it up in the book, you know, like "...give them a fish/teach them fishing..." story. This thesaurus has enough definitions and based on my humble opinion - a must!

Nice pictures and easy to use for younger kids. But it's EXTREMELY limited. My daughter couldn't even use it to search for "little"! So limited that I'm searching for an alternative. An adult thesaurus is daunting for a 2nd grader, but this doesn't meet our needs.

This is seriously lacking in content if my first grader can't find 70% of the words she looks up! We have a little game where we try and think of a better word to use instead of a basic, go-to and I foolishly thought that this would be helpful. Way to dumb kids down!

I knew within a couple of chapters that this would become one of my favorite books. It is so charming, so pretty, and I adored Cassandra for everything she was and everything she wasn't. Her innocence and refreshing admiration of life (of simple things, of nature & people) was so candid & well-expressed that the book had me walking around in a similar mindset every time I put it down. Her father's mysteriousness kept me as interested in him as she was; just as all of the characters wondered, I found myself constantly wondering "Is he genius? Is he crazy? Is he good? Bad?"Every character, for that matter, was complex and multidimensional. There were no stereotypes, no cliches - just complicated, real people who I loved getting to know.I really enjoyed the diary format - there were moments I felt like she stole my own thoughts. She's probably my all-time favorite character actually - so much depth, charisma, and joy.As for the romance, I loved all of it - I enjoyed the interaction between Cassandra & Stephen, how tense & confusing it was. It was so interesting to see how everything played out ... the way, at first, to Cassandra, Simon was just an awkward-looking man in a beard and then, he quickly becomes so much more to the entire family, changing their lives - in a way they had literally sat around hoping for just moments before.Smith's writing is flawless & beautiful. It flows so well. I could envision everything so vividly. It played like a movie in my mind.Be sure to read it! I wish I'd read it years ago

Taking place in the 1930s, I Capture the Castle is the story of Cassandra Mortmain, the daughter of James Mortmain, an author who once wrote an important and celebrated novel. Unfortunately, James has not been able to write for many years, ever since he was sent to prison for three months for knocking down a neighbor after a misunderstanding involving a cake knife. The Mortmain family - James, second wife and artist’s model, Topaz, older daughter and beauty, Rose, Cassandra, son, Thomas, and Stephen, the orphaned son of the family’s deceased maid – live in the crumbled ruins of a castle on which they have stopped paying rent. They have sold all of their possessions and barely have enough money to survive. Then their neighbor dies, leaving the castle and the neighboring estate, Scoatney, to his estranged American grandson, Simon Cotton, who comes to live at Scoatney along with his brother, Neil and his mother. The Cotton family is smitten with the Mortmain family, and nothing will ever be the same for either family. Cassandra’s coming-of-age story is told through the entries in her diaries.I thought this was a beautifully written book. Dodie Smith does a fantastic job of letting Cassandra’s thoughts and feelings flow onto the paper. We see Cassandra’s growth throughout the book as she progresses through the six-penny journal to the shilling journal and finally to the two-guinea journal as she records her thoughts. We share her hopes and dreams, and happy and sad memories as she tries to navigate growing up in a family struggling to survive, yet endeavoring to live a normal life. Cassandra seems to be the practical one of the family as she tries to help her father write again, schemes with Rose to find a husband, and struggles with Stephen’s feelings for her, as well as her growing feelings for another. It is both a humorous and poignant portrayal of a young girl finding her way in the world, as she also helps and cares for those around her. The novel also examines the English class system and compares English versus American traditions.

I am 60 years old, yet this book plunges me into youth so vividly, I can hardly bear it. It is British through and through. The ancient castle is the only setting it could have, and Cassandra its best narrator. The sections are divided by the narrator's collection of journals, along with their cost, a significant factor. It is long, full of puzzling, eccentric characters and then some so clear and lifelike that I believed the author must have known them intimately. I never wanted this book to end. I only wish I'd found it earlier in my life so I could savor it at many ages.

This is certainly a period piece, set in the 1930's, so while it's somewhat old fashioned in its feel, the writing is some of the most evocative I've read. It's not action packed by any means, and it's entirely first person, but it reads quickly and I found it very enjoyable. I appreciated that some elements if found in another book would have had predictable outcomes, while here they are not entirely predictable yet also manage to avoid the trap of implausible twists. The story is entirely set in England but it's also got a few American characters. That adds an additional element of interest for American readers with English ties, or vice versa. There is one stretch that's a bit melodramatic (meloromatic?) for my taste, but it's an important element that ultimately works well. If you find yourself struggling to maintain interest through that section just push through and know that it's not interminable.I find myself reading many more novels by male authors than female, but I found this female voice, both the author's and the protagonist's, to be a refreshing change of pace. I'm not saying this is a 5-star read, but I do think it is very good.

I had been hearing about this book for a while, but being from Afghanistan myself and growing up during this war I didn’t want to read a book that brings back all the horrible memories. I wasn’t ready and I waited. Finally, last week I decided that I am ready and I want to read this book. I have only finished the first book so far and it’s a beautiful story. The author has done a fantastic job. The book is super easy to read and understand. The story is of a young courageous girl who helps her family survive. This is the kind of book I would read with or to my daughter. It’s a book that shows how girls don’t need to wait for a Prince Charming to save the day. This story is proof that girls are strong, courageous, loving and kind. It proves that anyone can do anything and pull through hardships if they put their mind and heart to it. I recommend this book to anyone above the age of 8. I can’t wait to read the next 3 books.

Thoughts: I honestly can't walk two feet without being stopped and having this book recommended to me. This went on for about three years before I finally had enough of this and purchased the Breadwinner. And boy, am I glad I did. No one is more up for female rights than I am (I've probably written about a thousand female empowerment stories), and so this book instantly appealed to me. I loved I Am Malala, so hearing that this was in the same vein was immensely exciting. The Breadwinner is the kind of book that really anyone can read. Your age doesn't necessarily matter, since this book is written in a way that can transcend from eight to sixty year olds. But the writing wasn't what made this book impressive; the sheer character of Parvana herself, and the story she takes us along, is completely mindblowing. Sometimes, I had to stop myself and reread a section because it thrust me into disbelief. The things women had to go through under the rule of the Taliban - and STILL have to go through -.... it's just heartbreaking. This book serves not only to make us, as kids, aware of this difficult topic, but also spurs us to want to get involved. I was completely gripped the entire time while reading this book, and by the end of it, I was speechless. While, at some points, this is not the most engaging book per se, it is still a fascinating story that kids of all ages will enjoy.

I am considering teaching this book in a remedial English class. The great points about this book mainly are its readability and the fact that Ellis puts in enough detail germane to the action of the plot, but almost no extraneous description, or details for details sake. If you look into Deborah Ellis, she seems to be a woman of action, and has raised literal tons of money through charity organizations for Women's organizations in Afghanistan. The action is fairly quick, and I read it in one sitting. Your typical high school student will not complain as each chapter is short, and the pages turn quickly. You very early become endeared to Parvana, the protagonist through her interaction with her family members. As the book progresses you feel the pangs to continue.A well written book for young adults. Similar to The Kite Runner.

Eleven-year-old Parvana lives in Kabul, Afghanistan, under the Taliban, and this multicultural middle school book shows us what life is like when they're in power. She and her sisters can't go to school. They're not even supposed to go outside, and neither is their mother, unless accompanied by a man. Women and teenage girls must wear a burqa, which covers their entire body and face, except for the eyes.Parvana and her family used to live in a big house, but the daily bombing, which has gone on for years, has destroyed almost everything they owned. Now they live in one room. Her father supports them by reading and writing letters for uneducated people. Even this existence is threatened when the Taliban break in and arrest her father for the crime of having gone to school in England. "Afghanistan doesn't need your foreign ideas," they tell him as they drag him off to prison.Soon the family runs out of money and food, a desperate situation since Parvana, her mother, and her sisters can't be outside unless they're with a man. A neighbor woman comes up with an idea: Parvana can dress as a boy, because boys can come and go freely. She agrees, and wears the clothing of an older brother who died. Since she knows how to read, she earns money the same way her father did and becomes the family breadwinner. Then the family gets exciting news--Parvana's older sister receives a proposal of marriage from the son of old family friends. They live in north Afghanistan, where there are no Taliban. A journey is quickly planned, but Parvana can't go because the friends know she is a girl. Her family can't let her secret get back to Kabul.Parvana stays with the neighbor woman, but then bad news arrives: the Taliban have invaded the very city where Parvana's family went for the wedding. Now what will she do?This book was a fast and absorbing read. The writing style is simple but the story is so powerful I could hardly put it down, and the spirit and resilience of Parvana and her family were inspirational.Author Deborah Ellis visited Afghan refugee camps and talked with many girls like Parvana. She is donating the royalties from this book to Women for Women in Afghanistan, dedicated to improving the lives of women there. Read about current conditions in Afghanistan in this article.Reading level: 10 and up. Parvana, her mother, and her father receive beatings, but the description is minimal. The girl witnesses a public punishment where men convicted as thieves each have one hand chopped off. No gory details, but it is a shocking moment.

Inspiring, heartbreaking and gripping. Parvana's story brings a level of insight and humanity to the struggles of living under the Taliban, and Ellis's writing is clear enough that 5th grader could read it. I had only read it for a class assignment, but now I need to read the rest of the series!

Well written, middle-school story of a girl that is forced to dress as a boy in order to earn money for her family in Afghanistan under the rule of the Taliban.Although the author is not from Afghanistan, she apparently interviewed many refugees, heard their stories, and wrote this, based on all those interviews. This is the first book in the series. Now, I will move on to the second, as I am curious to see what happens next.

Be aware that this book was published in 1985, a fact I overlooked when I was purchasing it. A number of suggestions are grossly outdated despite the general good advice the author provides. This is particularly true when it comes to new or evolved terminology related to computers and technology now commonplace in our lives. It is interesting to see how language changes over the years. In addition, many examples refer to Biblical events, a style decision I don't think a modern author would make. It actually contains the phrase "Writers like God and Shakespeare know when to break the rules," which gave me a hearty laugh. Although I would love to see a new edition of this title, it is not so out-of-date to be considered useless. This book contains a wealth of great content that will help me improve my writing.

I expect a book on writing or editing to itself be well-written! Instead this book is packed with loose baggy sentences and shows no sign of having been thoroughly edited for clarity. I give it two stars not one because it seems to contain good ideas to improve my writing, but the presentation and prose make reading this book a chore and not a pleasure.

Thanks to this book, I have pruned my convoluted writing style down to simple, understandable prose. I recommend it to anyone who writes copy of any kind--from novelists and academics to secretaries and casual bloggers. One word of warning: Cook goes heavy on the jargon. Even expert grammarians would find some sections dense. If you can't identify a dependent clause, a correlative conjunction, a dangling participle, or any of the other terms on your ninth grade English quizzes, I would review the basics with a more digestible book first. My favorite is the McGraw-Hill Handbook of English Grammar and Usage, 2nd Edition.

If you think you write well (as I did) I strongly recommend reading this book. I have a number of helpful books on the creative and technical aspects of writing prose, but Claire Kehrwald Cook's book is by far and away the most helpful I have read. Where other books help in curbing the tendency to overwrite, this book puts a scalpel in the writer's hand that enables him to explore and cut deeply. You will be surprised how much the resulting excisions and rearrangements improve your writing. I found the chapters 'Faulty Connections' and 'Il-matched Partners' the most helpful. Without doubt this book has improved my writing. It will continue to do so as I regularly return to it

Superb! I am a programmer by day and a writer of articles on programming at other times.Growing up in England I was taught every miniscule detail of the English language. How to construct sentences and how pronunciation changes depending on word stems, Country of origin and so on. I had a pretty good grasp on writing. At work I spend some of my time re-writing briefing notes, user manuals, and proof-reading emails. On top of this I study grammar and style manuals. You get a feel for where I'm coming from in terms of expertise. This book changed my entire outlook on writing. I am only up to page 26 and already I have hacked through some articles like a whipper-snipper through a weeded garden. I found some habitual mistakes I constantly make and curbed some emerging ones. This is a fantastic book! The last briefing note I edited started as a monstrosity of bad grammar and ended as a shining example of what this book has to offer.I cannot recommend this book enough. It is only 200 pages but not a word is wasted. It is concise and packed full of information and is an example of its own subject.

This book focused more on grammatical editing issues like parallel sentence structure, verb-noun agreements. It seemed a bit basic as far as applying concepts to editing and spent far too much time going over grammar terms, like "gerunds", etc., that while good to know, did not really help me learn how to edit writing the way I thought the book would. Even at the low price, more concise lessons can be had on the internet for free.

Line By Line: How To Edit Your Own Writing demystifies line editing and enables authors to polish their own manuscripts. Author Claire Kehrwald Cook walks writers through the process step-by step from how to read and evaluate a sentence, to how to condense sentences to succinctly and clearly convey meaning. Along the way she tackles all the usual suspects: weak verbs, prepositional phrases, modifiers, structure, ambiguous words, parallelism and correlative conjunctions, punctuation, and subject-verb disagreement. Most helpful are the extensive glossary of `questionable word usage' and the numerous examples that help guide readers during editing. Used alongside a good book on grammar (such as Mignon Fogarty's Grammar Girl's Quick & Dirty Tips For Better Writing) and a professional developmental editor, Line By Line is a valuable resource for any writer wanting to craft a well-written manuscript.

Many sentences in this book have well above 40 words. Several previous reviewers have called the book "dense". Although the content is sometimes carelessly dense, this is just bad writing. It's almost like the author wanted to use a single sentence for every paragraph.
