I was engrossed in this book, and that should be 4 1/2 stars. (Amazon, how about letting us give half stars??) This story has twists and turns that kept me reading -- it genuinely is a book you do not easily put down. To be betrayed like Fi is, the good-hearted wife and mother, is simply painful to read. But is her husband really a villain, or simply a victim of circumstances? To my taste (please know this is a subjective comment) the author might have written a less chopped-up story if she had used the third person throughout and not inserted those blog (?) confessions by Fi. She also switches, towards the end, between first and third person story-telling, which I found less than ideal for the flow of the story. But apart from these minor niggles, I heartily recommend this quite long and involved story ... even if there are a few little holes near the end (I could not work out how the various deceptions could have been carried out without the neighbours latching on to it). But wow -- the ending comes as a shock! As they say -- and you will have to read to the end to understand this -- "the way to hell is paved with good intentions".

have read some very good books this year and I always love a thriller. Sadly, this wasn’t one of them. The premise of coming home to find some stranger moving into your home which begins a wife’s trepidatious journey to the realization that her cheating cad of a husband has perpetrated the ultimate fraud and sold their ritzy High-end home without her participation is promising. But, It’s the start of one looooonnnnggg drawn out scam. Too predictable, too obvious, and poorly constructed with no character development. ⭐️⭐️ for effort. #book #books #read #reader #thriller #characterdevelopment #yikes #ourhouse #sorrynotsorry #nextonewillbebetter #bunchoflosers

First thing I didn’t like about the book - it drags. So many details that it feels like the author is padding it so that it’s a thicker novel. Yes, yes - get on with telling the story. I wanted to forget about it, but it was recommended by a friend, so I stick with it & it was a twist ending that is so immensely unsatisfying. Open ended & the author’s final FU to the reader who manages to slog through it. I will never read another book by this author because I so disliked her writing style & cheap twists. Can’t get back my time having read this.

Oh what a dreadful book. It had SUCH potential. I purchased it right when it came out (don't do that) because the description sounded amazing. Of course once I started it (months later) I see that Amazon dropped it to $1.99 for good reason- its terrible. So many things didn't add up and the description is a lie- I don't want to give spoilers out but what kind of woman comes home to find another family in her house and doesn't go check on her kids!!!? I'm convinced this author has no children. The description says that her kids were missing....... not really although we wouldn't know since she not once until the last 9% of the book even worried about them. Just not a believable book in any way. Worst i've read in the last 2 years and giving 2 stars only because it was a clever idea, but terrible execution. And the end- oh the end.... nothing positive to say about it. It also took me over a month to read whereas I usually read a book in a day or two- I should have stopped early on but I really wanted to like this book. Terrible disappointment.

The conclusion saved this novel...it's epic! Our House has one of the best endings I've read in a long, long time. It's so deliciously satisfying, I'm feeling a bit gushy right now. While the story is overly wordy and repetitive, the final 20% of the book ties everything beautifully together, and I finally recognized why Louise Candlish made certain decisions with the story line.Have I stressed how epic the ending is?So, here is my advice--while reading this story, even when it's feeling pretty slow, keep pushing through. The ending will make it worth your time. I promise.Such a freaking clever ending.

A riveting novel with lots of twists and turns. The ending is a masterpiece - pure genius. I've already shared with my neighbor who returned the book with an expression of shock & amazement on her face and said, "I have never read a book quite like this". My husband, who is not an avid reader himself, is mesmerized and hasn't been able to put it down. Highly recommend.

I thought this was brilliant. Full of suspense great story, yes in fact this is possible and the twists and turns were enough to keep you up reading at night. Great beach read this summer if you have hours to relax, difficult to put down.

I liked listening to the people in this story, particularly the two main characters "Fi" and "Bram". For at least half of the story, Fi and Bram were in sync. Each of them wholeheartedly loved their two sons and did the best to raise them. Occasionally, though, the story bogged down periodically when it seemed there was too much talking. In the last half of the book, Bram began having financial difficulties yet didn't share that with his wife. The book became even more interesting and well worth reading!

About 90% of the book is pictures of scenes in movies or movie posters with small anecdotes underneath. The other 10% is composed of 1-2 pages of text regarding the subject matter of each chapter and some 2 page interviews with the likes of Ray Harryhausen, John Carpenter, Stan Winston, David Cronenberg, Guillermo Del Toro and others. The meat of the book is the interviews, which unfortunately there are not enough of. It's a nice book to serve as an introduction to the genre and for reference to movies that are not necessarily the standard fare, however Landis' "analysis" is very generic and lacks the thought provocation of his movies.

Review is for the kindle version, and is more of a warning than a review. The art and photography is possibly the biggest selling point for this book, and the product description states that its optimized for large tablets, but it didn't look like that to me. The pictures are tiny postage stamp things, and you can click on them for a slightly larger version, but the overall effect is pretty unimpressive. If I had it to do over again, I'd just pay another 10-20 dollars and get the print version. Landis's knowledge and enthusiasm for the genre do come through here, but this review is really about the print vs kindle version.

Excellent collection and written history of the monsters of the screen that many of us grew up with. Beautifully designed picture layouts with many full color photographs. Well written by John Landis, who from all information, seems to have grown up as many of us "boomers" did watching and worshipping Frankenstein, Dracula and The Wolfman, not to mention all the other classic creatures from late night fright TV, plus those in modern screen history. A great read and a great source of information behind the scenes of the classics of horror movies. Well worth the price of admission!

I bought this as a gift for my father-in-law. He is a huge horror movie fan, and it's something we've bonded on. This was an easy choice as a gift. I had the opportunity to look through it after I gave it to him. Side note: he absolutely LOVED it. The information inside is quite informative, and it was super cool to see the history behind a lot of well known monsters. If you or someone you know is interested in what happens behind the scenes than this is the book for you!

After seeing this book in stores a year ago, and not wanting to pay the high price, I ordered through amazon and couldn't be more pleased with the purchase. This is basically a large picture book of movie monsters dating from the 20's through modern times. The book is by John Landis and is his version of monster history. (both good and bad)There are some short interviews (insights) with some of his Hollywood friends, makeup artists, and directors that could have been a little longer.A great book for those of us who love horror movies and the creatures they spawn.

I have no complaints about this book! It's beyond the best horror book I've ever owned! John Landis did an AMAZING job making this beautiful creation and I hope he makes more! I love how it's so glossy and detailed. Every page is colorful and descriptive. What more do you need? It's all here! 320 pages of pure entertainment and it'll keep you busy for hours! Definitely worth every penny! And I'm the BIGGEST horror monster fan you'll ever know! This book impresses me!

I enjoyed this book. It represents a fast and pleasurable romp through the history of movie monsters from the silent era to today. John Landis, as almost everyone knows, directed some of the most well known and culturally influential movies, including An American Werewolf in London and The Blues Brothers. Landis's love for Dark Fantasy films really shines here and hooks the reader. The pictures are very attractive and the interviews with well known personalities involved with monster movies were educational. Landis is a very opinionated writer which I find to be refreshing. In his interviews, he is able to draw out blunt observations from those he talked with. The monster movies are grouped into broad categories throughout the book. They are: Vampires, Werewolves, Mad Scientists, Zombies, Ghosts, Mummies, Myths/Legends/Fairy Tales, Dragons/Dinosaurs, Monstrous Apes, Nature's Revenge, Atomic Mutations, The Devil's Work, Space Monsters, Monstrous Machines, Human Monsters, and The Monster Makers. At the beginning of each section, Landis would provide a two page overview about the subject or topic. His writings are clear, succinct, and knowledgeable, with the right touch of humor. This is a book that any fans of Dark Fantasy movies will want to obtain and read (and re-read) during any "dark and gloomy nights."

This is an amazing book to have if you're a fan of monsters and horror movies. It has a lot of interviews with famous directors and make up artists and tons of pictures broken down into different categories.

Review

"Running to the Edge reveals the untold history of how a determined coach and his motley crew of underdogs practically defibrillated U.S. distance running. It is at once a beautiful meditation on effort and a tale as captivating and suspenseful as a great race." --David Epstein, New York Times bestselling author of The Sports Gene"Running To The Edge is at its heart a vivid, fascinating and affectionate portrait of a man who changed the sport of running in America, and of the sport that changed him. Through the story of a pioneer coach, Bob Larsen, Matt Futterman deftly describes both the running boom era of the 1970s and 1980s, and the resurgence of American distance-running talent in the aughts. I can't think of a runner who wouldn't enjoy this book."--Ed Caesar, author of Two Hours: The Quest to Run the Impossible Marathon"A captivating narrative. Futterman gives us an informative history of American distance running while telling a fascinating story about a group of unconventional San Diegan boys who unexpectedly competed for a national cross country championship in 1976 against the well-established major running clubs. Futterman profiles a young coach Bob Larsen, who was developing training methods that would later turn UCLA into a national running powerhouse, and help lead Meb Keflezighi and Deena Kastor to become Olympic marathon medal winners."--Bill Pierce, co-author of  Run Less, Run Faster"At the core, running is about pushing one’s self to the limit. Matthew Futterman’s Running to the Edge is a fascinating account of Bob Larsen’s journey to uncover the secrets of optimal run training, initially for himself and then for his runners. The story is riveting. If you love running this book will knock your shoes off--highly recommended!"--Jordan D. Metzl, MD, author of Dr. Jordan Metzl’s Running Strong “Matt Futterman’s definitive examination of this primal human sport--distance running--richly serves a subject he knows intimately and rewards the reader with a captivating ride. This is a classic American underdog tale, populated by appealing oddballs, in search of answers to an age-old mystery: Why do we run? Running to the Edge takes you right where it promises it go."    --Mark Frost, author of The Match, and creator of “Twin Peaks”"Many running fans know about marathon star Meb Keflezighi and perhaps even about his longtime coach, Bob Larsen. But few have heard about Larsen's life and coaching before Meb. That's the story told for the first time in Running to the Edge, a tale about the ragtag, improbably named "Jamul Toads" running club, and how Larsen's training methods turned the toads into national-class gazelles. It's a throwback story, recalling an era when passion was more important than sponsorships and the goal was more often guts than glory. Readers will feel themselves drawn into the Bob Larsen-Jamul Toads ethic, and they'll cheer out loud for the little-known underdogs. I know I did." --Amby Burfoot, 1968 Boston Marathon champ, former editor in chief of Runners World and author of Runner's World Complete Book of Running"Packed with valuable knowledge elegantly conveyed, Running to the Edge is an inspiring and eye-opening look into the evolution of the distance running tradition. Matthew Futterman beautifully translates his passion and curiosity for running into a book that speaks to runners of all abilities."--Alexi Pappas, distance runner and star of Tracktown"Coach Bob Larsen has been a father figure to me and provided me with guidance that was key to my success. He is knowledgeable and witty and his approach is all about making small progress in order to prepare you for big-time races. I’ve been fortunate to have his great insight for decades." --Meb Keflezighi, New York and Boston Marathon Champion, and U.S. Olympic Silver Medalist
