Ambitious hiking books like this come in two flavors: mainly informational or mainly inspirational. This is the latter. It's more of a really nice coffee table-style tome, filled with insights from the author on the character and history of each trail and packed with many fantastic photos.What kind of trails are included? The key word here is right in the title: GREAT. "Great" as in amazing - these are, without a doubt, mind-blowing trails. "Great" as in size - these are long trails. The Appalachian Trail, the Pacific Crest Trail, the Via Alpina - virtually all of them are multi-day treks, with some taking months to complete. "Great" as in famous - these are well-established trails, many of which will be familiar (by name, at least) to avid hikers.So you won't find shorter trails such as the Sentiero degli Dei in Italy or The Narrows in Utah here (to pick two examples out of a hat). Nor will you find worthwhile yet lesser trod areas such as, say, the Cordillera Huayhuash, Dinaric Alps, or mountains of Georgia (the nation, natch). And the cover touting "80 Trails", while technically correct, is best thought of as 35 trails with a full write-up and 45 'honorable mentions'.The book features basic practical information, such as the length of the trail and the best season to go. This is smart - you could write an entire book devoted to any one of the trails here. This is not a trail guide, nor is it trying to be. If you're looking for an informational alternative, try Peter Potterfield's "Classic Hikes of the World". However, if you're looking for a book to be inspired by, to gawk at, or to present as a gift for your favorite armchair traveler, this makes a great choice.

I have heard about the author’s work, seen random things about her professional life on social media, and have come to respect and admire her as an author, an artist, and a motivator. I bought the book out of curiosity and immediately decided it was the perfect Christmas gift for my husband. We are periodic hikers but constant dreamers about such places, and nothing suits the bill better than to present this to him. We hiked to the summit of Mount Fuji 4 years ago and it’s long past time to take another significant hike together. This book is full of beautifully presented hikes around the world. The author is engaging and articulate, and knows her content first hand. So well done, such a beautiful volume for our home. It may be hidden in my sweater drawer waiting for Christmas, but I will admit here that I am guilty of pulling it out several times to turn the pages of this gorgeous gift, with dreams of the adventures that lie ahead.

Okay, I have enjoyed this annual publication of short plays from previous years but this 2015 edition is slipshod and appears untouched by an editor's hand. Several of the plays have dialogue of multiple characters combined with no indication of whose line it is (as an editing error and not the playwright's intent), typos abound, and text in many cases is formatted incorrectly. It is as though either this was published on a deadline and the plays were submitted so close to that deadline that they could not be reviewed and edited or the person responsible for the layout of the book was drunk and paralyzed while doing so. If this were my only example of these collections, it is such a jumbled mess that it would all but guarantee I would not purchase another.

I haven't read every ten-minute play of 2015 so I can't objectively say that these are, in fact, the best. But you will find a nice variety of collected plays, one of which is sure to interest you. Many of these are clever, and several are silly. All that I have read so far are fun. It's also super convenient that the plays are labeled by how many actors/characters are needed. This is a good read.

I look forward to this collection every year. I enjoy reading plays more than stories, the dialogue more than description. I especially appreciate the skill it takes to tell a story in ten minutes. Full disclosure: I am related to one of the playwrights. I do enjoy the work of others featured in this anthology.

Really nice book, made a few recipes and they came out great. My husband and in-laws are Iraqi and these recipes are very close to mom's home cooked meals and snacks. I did find a few recipes where the translations were lost or the ingredients were a little off, but nothing too hard to figure out.

This book was written in a clear and easy to understand way but also felt like it was my mother teaching me how to cook something over the phone. Enjoyable to read and the recipes are easy to do. Lamees, thank you for sharing your knowledge and experiences.

You can't find a better cookbook than this. My wife is Iraqi and she loves it. She is able to share recipes with friends because all the measurements are in American standard. Pictures are worth a thousand words and this cookbook makes your mouth water.

The book includes most of the typical Iraqi dishes but I doubt that the recipes will deliver well when put to the test in the kitchen, especially by cooks unfamiliar with the cuisine, for the following reasons:The user of this book has to be prepared to figure out how much spices and salt to add to most of the dishes, which might work with some foods like stews and the like, but definitely not the stuffed ones, for instance, and there are so many of these. The cooking instructions, more often than not, are inadequate, which the casual reader might see and welcome as simple. The cook has to do a lot of guesswork, especially when dealing with complex dishes.Most importantly, the user of the book needs to make up her/his mind whether to follow measurements by cup or by weight (given as equivalents in the lists of ingredients), because they are really really screwed up, especially with measurements of ingredients like flour, sugar, nuts, chopped parsley, dates, cheese, coconut.Some of the ingredients are not rendered accurately into English such as, green lentil for mung beans (mash), yellow turnip for kohlrabi (kalam). And speaking of citrus trees blossoming in autumn in Iraq (p. 275)? I don't think so. The typical Iraqi variety of mint bot-nij is not peppermint but river mint. About 80% digression, 20% (if that) actual writing on the history of life. I am a layperson, but I honestly could not tell you what, if anything, I learned about early life from this book. Fortey seems far more preoccupied with the trappings of being a scientist than he is with the science itself.Buy this book if you want to know about the quality of the eggs served at Fortey's favorite bed and breakfast, "...the perfect bed and breakfast in a Tudor house with flag floors and improbable staircases. [The] breakfast was neither too much nor too little, the egg yolks were soft and the whites were cooked, the toast warm and cut into triangles on which to spread thick, home-made marmalade, and pots of tea arrived unbidden." (ACTUAL QUOTE from page 143 of Fortey hitting peak digression in a chapter on early terrestrial plant life.)I can not understand how this book came to be known as such a touchstone on the topic.

British paleontologist Richard Fortey has written a marvelously concise and erudite historical synopsis of terrestrial life from around 4,000 million years ago, when meteors seeded the planet with the elements, most importantly carbon, that allowed for the evolution of organic molecules, to around 25,000 years ago, when Cro-Magnon Homo sapiens founded interior decorating by painting animals on the walls of his cave living-rooms. Fortey's account necessarily leaves off with the beginning of recorded history. (Blessedly, the life forms "Benifer" and Michael Jackson fail to appear in the narrative even once.)The author hits the high points, including the evolution of single cells, the formation of bacterial colonies, the initiation of chlorophyll-based photosynthesis (that ultimately charged the atmosphere with oxygen), the specialization of cells into tissues, the population of the seas, the advance onto land, the greening of the earth, the separation of ancient Pangaea into today's separate continents, the Age of Dinosaurs, the advent of live-birth from wombs, the ascendancy of mammals, and finally the evolution of Man. For me, the most interesting chapter was on the apocalyptic cataclysm which ended the Age of Dinosaurs, i.e. the asteroid which apparently slammed into the Mexican Yucatan Peninsula creating the Chicxulub Crater. The volume also includes several photo sections that provide an adequate visual summary of the text.The time spans of Fortey's tale are almost beyond mental grasp. For instance, at one point the author states that tool making by hominids began about 2.5 million years ago. Yet the style of the tools, the "technology" if you will, then remained virtually unchanged for the next million years. After witnessing the dizzying pace of technological advancement just during the span of my own life, this stagnation for such an incomprehensible length of time is mind-boggling.I wish I had but a fraction of Fortey's knowledge of our world. LIFE should be required reading in every high school science program.

This is a wonderful book and very well-written. Fortey's elegant prose style and his sense of humor make it a joy to read! However, it would have been a much better book if drawings had been included in the text to illustrate more of the organisms and concepts he introduces. Also, the bibliography is very skimpy.

Like his more recent book Trilobyte, this book is well crafted. For the reader interested in the process of discovery by a scientist, I suspect that this book will satisfy. Sadly, I came to the book in a search for current information about the history of life on earth and was disappointed. The book drifts between stories of the author's paleontological expeditions and a discussion of theories of the history of life on earth. If the reader is actually attempting to learn what Fortey knows about that history he is left to riffle through the pages in search of information. There are some interesting discussions here, but unfortunately they are buried in chatty biography. In short, if you are interested in Richard Fortey's life, buy this book. If you are interested in life on this planet, keep looking.

After reading a growing list of books on biology, geology, evolution and ecology if somebody asked me to recomend to good books to get an understanding and overview on the history of life on earth and geology I would recomend him `Life' and `Earth' both writen by Richard Fortey. Fortey is a very talented writer, he uses a similar approach as did Stephen Gould by presenting a complex topic in an accesible way starting with a very concrete example. Both books are easy and fun to read but when finished the reader realizes he managed to grasp quite a few important points. Both books were a good start to continue further reading on more specific topics within the areas of earth sciences, history of life and geology. I do strongly recomend this book

An excellent history of life on this planet told in a very personable way. I finished it and have started reading it again. The author presents a joy of discovery that is infectious - a pleasure to read. This is an excellent book as a starting off point into the fossil record and has excited me to learn more and dive deeper. 6 Stars - oh, they only allow 5? Oh well...

Fortey really makes you feel as if you're there in the distant geological past. the descriptions are so vivid and the prose is absolutely lovely. Get it, get it, get it, cant say enough good things about this book.really lovely stuff.

I like this book so much I'm buying it again after lending it to a friend who will probably never return it. I used this book and its recommendations with some changes and lost a significant amount of weight and reduced my risk for several health issues. For those who talk about this book being a "marketing scam"- don't let them get you down. There is a recommendation to uae supplements the author's company makes, and I did not buy a single one. I still lost over 60lbs. I've followed Phillip's core principles several years later and have kept a majority of that weight (as in 55lbs of it) off. If you want sound advice and have an ounce of common sense to make effective choices for yourself, then give this a try. It's not a small commitment; it takes time and effort like any health/lifestyle overhaul.

This routine is all about working smarter, not harder or more often. I did the Body-4-Life routine back in the early 2000's and went on to do it again a few years later. As a male my physique gained good muscle mass w/ out bulk from fat. You'll get the kind of figure that most people find sexy. I am planning on doing it AGAIN in 2017. Personally I think this is one of the best work-out systems ever created .. and if you're looking to get in shape w/ out needing to spending long hours in the gym, then this is for you !! The routine is is only 3 days of weights a week, w/ a 45 minute target time .. and only 2 days of cardio at 20mins .. perfect for the busy person who can't spend an hour and a half doing weights or cardio in the gym ! Since there is only 3 weekly (45min) weight work outs, it's much easier to find a partner who can commit and stay committed !! Your partner only need meet up for under 3 hours a week !! Most routines are 4 to 6 (1.5hr) sessions a week. I also like the suggested eating regime, 3 meals a day and 3 (meal-replacement) shakes a day. Who wants to eat 4 to 6 meals of food a day ? Not me, that's why I like this system so much.

If you follow this, it will work. Period. I dropped 52lbs in 12 weeks. Just don't go completely nuts on your free day. Far from a weird fad diet, this just makes sense. Eat well and exercise. This book explains how to do both effectively and quickly, and it's not a sales pitch for supplements. Bill's company, EAS was sold to Abbott labs years ago. I did use protein powder or meal replacement shakes for a couple meals per day and still do, but it is not in any way a requirement for this to work.

A power lifting friend told me about this book many years ago. I had been very ill for an extended period of time and this book was a great way to get back into shape. I recently decided to go back to the gym and the same friend reminded me of this book. I couldn't believe it's still available after 20 years!I consider this the ultimate guide for those who are just beginning to lift weights or who are returning (like me) after an extended absence. No need to spend HOURS in the gym. The weight workouts are 45 minutes and interval/aerobic is 20. The routines are mapped out, there are good instructions and pictures to support doing the exercises correctly, and there's an eating plan. Bill Phillips is very inspiring and the book is easy to read.If you're thinking of lifting weights and don't know where to start or if you're returning and need some inspiration, buy this!

Probably the easiest and best fitness/food program to follow. I've used this book numerous times. Also, have lent this book out to people and never gotten it back which is why I've probably bought this book 3-4 times. Phillips has a super simple program that leads to clear, dramatic and sustainable results. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to get into shape. In particular because the food aspect of this book isn't gimmicky. It's super straight forward and I think leaves you with a blue print you can follow to continue in the future after you reach your fitness goals.

Love this book, I have purchased it many, many times. I have had such great success with it and when I'm asked about my "diet and exercise" program, I tell them all about this. I keep buying copies to hand out when someone is genuinely interested in how it all works.

My friend found a trainer and paid BIG bucks for his training. When my friend revealed his his workout schedule and nutrition plan... it was BFL.....If you are motivated this is a great kick start to a healthy lifestyle.

BFL is still a great resource and program. The 12 week plan is organized for efficient and logical use of time; it worked very well for me years ago. I view this workout routine as I did my Navy boot camp years ago - very structured, but easy to follow. Though I'm in my mid-50's, this workout plan still fits nicely. After I complete these 12 weeks, I'll maintain my health by using his brother's book, Strength For Life (less intense, but similar concept). My original new copy of Body for Life from over 10 years ago has been heavily used, so I needed another one for reference that's still in one piece.
