I grew up with this group. Posters on the walls and the albums on the record player. I read the Peter Cris book first. The Ace book second and they were hard to put down. I finished them both in little time. With Genes book it started out OK but then seemed to just fizzle. In comparison to P Cris book and Ace Freely, Genes seems to be more about him with occasional sprinkles of the rest of the band here and there. I really enjoyed how the first two books mentioned above really encompassed the life and events of the band as a whole as well as dealing with the personal events of each artist. With Genes book it was almost like a chore to finish it. I felt like I had invested the time to start so I didnt want to give up and quit in it but it certainly left me wishing it had been a little more interesting.

Any Kiss fan will know most of what he's going to find here. Gene's personality, ego, business philosophy, etc. And the girls in the thousands. What was most interesting to me was the story of his birth, early years, and coming to America. I also read Ace Frehley's book, "No Regrets" and it seems that each of the 3 members who wrote a book each have slightly different memories of the same events. Not unusual, (some would accuse the Bible of the same thing) but interesting nonetheless. I did get a little weary of Gene's Ace-bashing. I mean, it's been a long time since Kiss was at the top of the rock world, and it seems he'd let some bygones be bygones. All that aside, Gene's an interesting and successful man in an industry where success is hard to come by and although he'll never be in the bassists hall of fame his contribuiton to rock n' roll is a part of history.

While people and himself claim he's a marketing genius, the truth is others have done the work and he's reaping the glory. This book is nothing but self promotion about his ego and all the women he's "conquered" or fornicated with. While learning from this and another book just how bad Ace and Peter just really were, Gene pretty much presents himself as the sole motivation behind ALL of KISS's business dealings and the sole driving force in KISS. Like I said before this book is nothing but ego salving, self pro motioning and would recommend Paul Stanley's book instead.

Gene Simmons has another way to shine in the spotlight. Kiss and Makeup is the new biography on Kiss bassist Gene Simmons. The book covers Genes life from his upbringing in Israel as a child named Chaim Witz. He chronicles his life through the tough times living with his Mother. Coming from a poor family, he and his mother made their way to America. Following his mother's strong will Gene made his way through life by his own rules and succeeded in becoming one of Rock and Rolls most notable superstars.The reading is interesting. Because I've have been a major Kiss fan for twenty-six years I've heard or read most of this before. There was some very interesting information that I was not aware of such as the real reason Peter Criss left Kiss in 1980. Gene chronicles his way into music, the history of Kiss from a tell all perspective, his business ventures, his relationships with Cher, Dianna Ross, and Shannon Tweed. Let's not forget the groupies. Every story he covers seems to include some sort of sexual escapade.To anyone who is a general fan, the reading will be informative and interesting. To big fans it will be very enjoyable. This is "Behind The Music" in print. If you enjoy reading, pick this one up!

First of all, this book tells the story of Gene Simmons and not so much the story of Kiss, though at times it may seem that they are both the same thing. Many Kiss fans will find that Gene barely mentions huge chunks of the band's history such as the 80's and 90's. Non-original members of Kiss such as Bruce Kulick and Eric Carr barely get a passing mention. Even Paul Stanley, who has stood by Kiss when Gene was trying to be an actor is not mentioned nearly enough. What Gene does speak of are of his childhood and teenage years and how comic books and TV shaped his personality and planted the seeds that would become Kiss.Most Kiss fans will know many of the stories here but there is still plenty of juicy stuff, especially about fellow Kiss mates Ace Frehley and Peter Criss of whom Gene has nary a kind word. The fans' illusions of a tight knit band were all four members are friends and share some sort of magic bond will be completely dispersed here since it appears they never got along since the very beggining!

This is a reasonable book and in some places gives a better insight into Gene and his personality...it should do being an autobiography ! But all too often this is just Gene's excuse to get up on his soap box and lecture about how great he is and how right his philosophy on life is.The last chapter or two of the book were the worst. All through the book Gene attacks Ace and Peter and the last couple of chapters are basically just that.Don't get me wrong, I sympathise with Gene and Paul's constant struggle with Ace and Peter, but I think the bashing would have been better kept to a minimum and balanced with slightly more praise for their contribution to the big picture.A far better book - in my mind the essential history of KISS - is called KISS and Sell and is written by Chris Lendt (ex-employee of Aucoin management). That book is exceptional and written by a far more intelligent and articulate man than Gene. Also a man who remembers far more than Gene seems to.Buy Gene's book by all means, but whatever you do get Chris Lendt's book first - you will never regret it.

This edition covers just about everything I need to know about keeping ducks. The author goes into more depth regarding breeding, especially colors, than I thought possible. If I have questions, I always refer to this book.

If you only buy one book about raising ducks, this is the one you want.This book helped me choose a breed, design a predator-resistant duck house and duck yard, and create a healthy feeding/watering plan. With its help, I raised mail-order ducklings to a healthy laying flock--losing only 1 out of 9 ducklings.It is a VERY PRACTICAL guide written by a man who has tons of experience breeding, raising, and showing ducks of many different breeds. It has probably some of the best breed descriptions (although, of course, not lots of beautiful color photos) in any duck book I've read. His duck feeding, watering, and housing guides are in-depth and practical. I refer to them frequently as the needs of my flock change. I find if I'm running into trouble--it's usually because I disregarded one of his suggestions. His health section has tips to prevent illness in the first place, and treatment suggestions keeping in mind the real world value of your average duck. There is a short section on butchering/ recipes too, as well as showing.

This book is an EXCELLENT starter for when you're contemplating a flock of ducks but haven't made the move to buy them yet. Holderread bred most of the important duck breeds himself, so I trust his information completely. Unfortunately, because this is a basic, overall guide, he makes the information far too general and commercial. This book is decidedly aimed at the large, commercially breeding or laying flock and neglects details that a novice or hobby farmer might want to know (such as what human foods are acceptable duck foods and which ones are dangerous--he mentions only canola oil as toxic--and what ducks respond well to as treats, training and overall human interaction). If you plan to have a flock of a hundred ducks and set things up for minimal contact, then putting in wire floors and such as he recommends may be appropriate. If you care about the quality of life of your ducks, then don't listen to him when he claims ducks don't need to swim and that the only benefit of swimming is feather quality.Essentially, I recommend reading this through, but then finding books such as The Resilient Gardener to expand in detail on how to really care for ducks if you're not a big-time farmer.

First 100-150 pages go into immense detail about all the different breeds out there. These chapters are split up by weight of bird (bantam, lightweight, medium, heavy), then go into detail on each breed: giving a history, description, overview of varieties within the breed, how to select breeders, and factors going into show birds. As someone just starting out, I didn't find this info relevant and ended up just skipping it once I understood that the structure of the chapters. Similar comments apply to the chapters on duck colors/genetics.It was really the second half of the book that I found useful: chapters on incubation, rearing, managing adult ducks, and feed. There was also a very detailed section on duck illnesses which would be handy for reference purposes when needed.Bottom line, I went in thinking that such a large (and well reviewed book) would impart much greater knowledge than some of the shorter, more accessible books; but again, half the book was not relevant to someone just starting out raising ducks for the first time.

I had ducks growing up but am basically getting ducks for the first time now that we have 2 kids and live in the country. I plan on getting 3-4 and just need a quick easy reading book that I can reference to quickly if needed. This book is great because it has a tun of info. But there's so much info that I don't need in it and each topic is covered in great detail. I got a little bored with the book and just skimmed through the specific topics I was looking for. I'm disappointed there's no color pictures and not a lot of pictures to help with descriptions. It's not a very fun book. This book seems like it would be excellent for someone wanting to be a duck farmer rather than just having a couple pet ducks. I recommend the book, Duck Eggs Daily by Lisa Steele for people who want to have a few pet ducks.

This is an eye opening book on the various ways you can be defrauded out of your hard earned income. Many of the examples of financial fraud discussed in the book I have personally witnessed. I am much better prepared to manage my investments after reading this book.

This author does make a lot of good points and really does help us to appreciate our girl's point of view. I've learned a lot!On the other hand, I felt it's teaching us to be a loving, well-disciplined, tongue-biting . . . doormat. The ultimate goal here is to be a safe person to come to - to go from being an authority to being an adviser while our daughters do what they're going to do and trusting that ultimately they're going to ride out the storm and become respectable, responsible people.Yes - she does talk about saying, "No" and having rules, but to be honest, my stomach was churning when she cited an example of a mom who asked her daughter if she was having sex, and when the answer was "Yes, and I want birth-control pills" - this mom had the "audacity" of looking shocked. The example goes on to tell how the MOTHER had to come back an apologize for not being safe and accepting enough. They resolved things with the mom just standing by and letting her daughter engage in promiscuous behavior (helping get pills and keeping the house "off limits). Great . . .I'll be honest - I'm still reading, hoping perhaps that I'm going to find something in here that talks about making time to teach values, expecting responsible behavior, and holding our kids accountable to family rules since they are benefiting from parental sacrifices. I also haven't yet found anything about filling our daughter's lives with positive influences/people (church, good books, role models) that can help them start making and benefiting from positive choices sooner than later.I think sometimes it's just as important to set unpopular boundaries that protect our kids as it is to be "safe." It's a balancing act - and not an easy one.For example, I have a sister who was homecoming queen who had a boy show up at her bedroom window. My dad was like, "Old Yeller" protecting his daughter. She was mortified, but years later (with an amazing husband and a beautiful family) she's tearfully acknowledged how grateful she was that Dad held the line and was strong for her at perhaps a time of weakness.Rather than just being a rather passive "adviser" I believe our role is to be more of a guide. Think of a guide in the Grand Canyon saying, "You know, I'd strongly suggest you don't go that way, the bridge is out and there have been rock-slides, but I'll support you and I'm here for you if you choose otherwise."No - the guide keeps the group together and maps a course through rough terrain. And - yes, the guide might alter course when reasonable requests are made and yes, someone can choose to ignore the guide and go their own way, but the guide's job is to help the group have an amazing adventure safely.I think it's possible to be a totally safe person to come to without surrendering family rules and values. I think we can send the message, "I love you unconditionally and will sacrifice for your sake to help you find real happiness. I will help you find and support healing, healthy choices. And if you choose destructive behavior, I love you enough NOT to support that."A string doesn't hold a kite down, it makes it possible for it to fly. Let go of the string and the kite falls to the earth. Holding the line is sometimes (and perhaps often) exactly what our kids need.I certainly don't have all the answers, but so far, I don't feel like this book does either.I'll update this comment if I find the author has addressed this later. For now, I'm taking what she says with a pretty good-sized grain of salt.

This book is full of excellent information about parenting teen girls. Lucie Hemmen has written the book in a very user friendly manner. It has many wonderful ideas for communicating to your daughter, as well as signs to watch out for in our teens behavior that may mean they need our direct help - or when to seek professional help.

I wanted to like this book... I wanted to get some good advice about handling my daughter's transition form child to teen. But honestly it just didn't do it for me. I feel like the book could have been half as long and still have said the same things. I much prefer the other book I bought at the same time, "Untangled". That is a detailed book with great insight into the behaviors I am seeing in my daughter.

There seems to be a lot of helpful information in this book. The way that it was written is easy to read. It is almost as if it is written from the viewpoint of a teenager giving advice on what works best for her. The information that is presented is very applicable to real life and shows the parent how to not only help and understand her teenage daughter but it also helps the parent help and understand herself. A worthwhile purchase that has helped me to take a different perspective.

This is a must for surviving a teenage girl. After reading this, we know we are not crazy - they are. My husband and I can now not get upset at the outrageous things she says and does, and just look at each other with humor and knowing. The advice is great. I read it so fast the first time through as though my life depended on it, and now am going to read it slowly to get every bit of wisdom and knowledge. MUST READ.

Very good book for anyone trying to parent & raise a teenage girl. As a single dad, this has helped me tremendously, knowing that my daughter has lots of inner struggles, peer pressure, self-image issues & more emphasis on what OTHER people (teenagers) are thinking; plus she's caught in that awkward age between a "kid" & an "adult"...hormones aren't the problem, they are there but the big issue is the developing brain. I think every parent of a teenage girl should at least read it & then see how you feel/think about what the author is saying. Personally, I highly recommend it!

I still have a couple chapters left to read but I have been very pleased with it so far. The book gives such realistic examples that sometimes I feel like they could have pulled them from our everyday life. It has helped guide me with my daughter as she enters a different stage of her life. I'm so grateful to have found a book that gives loving advice.

I bought this book on my kindle, I think it is the kind of advice/guide book that I will return to often when feeling confused or exasperated. I ordered a teen parenting book before, I forgot the title, but it was not helpful at all and it talked down to me as a parent, as if I hadn't already thought of and tried out the obvious author's suggestions. Like we parents didn't get the nuances.Lucie Hemmen doesn't do this thankfully. It is very straightforward, clear and helpful!
