I love James Patterson and have read everyone of his books. I, Michael Bennett was such a disappoinment. You get to the last page and think "What the hell just happened, did my Kindle drop some pages." You don't know how the books ends. How long do we have to wait for a sequel. Not fair to the Patterson readers!!

I'm late to the party for this series of books from James Patterson, but that doesn't mean I was disappointed in not having know about them. I just need to keep my eyes open better for future books in the series.NYPD Red is a specialized unit of Detectives in the New York Police Department who are tasked with solving crimes that involve or revolve around the wealthy, politically connected, or just plain old celebrities. In other words these Detectives and their Captain need to know how to handle the elite and their harsh personalities.In this first book of the series the city of New York is trying it's best to lure the Movie and Television Industry to come to New York and make more flicks there instead of in Hollywood. Unfortunately a disgruntled and disturbed individual wants to sabotage the week of events scheduled. So, this person sets about to start murdering people who are wealthy, connected and part of the Hollywood scene.At first it seems like just one murder, but as the bodies pile up the NYPD Red team his overdrive to try and solve the crimes.There are a bunch of little sub-plots that run through the novel involving the two main detectives, Detective Jordan and Detective McDonald. It seems they have a past dating relationship and that causes some issues. BUT, they are the top two Detectives in New York and they have a very unorthodox way of solving crimes, they break the rules!Having worked with police officers as a police chaplain I found the descriptions of the characters very accurate and reasonable even though people might think Patterson has exaggerated them a bit.Will Jordan and McDonald be able to stop this crusader / murderer before he or she can kill hundreds? That's the question and the heart stopping action will keep you reading.Enjoy!

The stories in the NYPD Red series have been fast-paced and enjoyable, with plenty of suspense and plot twists. This book is no exception. It begins with the murder of a glamour girl, and theft of her fortune in jewelry, in front of a crowd of New York theater-goers. The culprit disappears, leaving a city amazed at the crime. This is obviously a case for New York's elite Red detective unit, and Detectives Zack Gordon and Kylie McDonald get the assignment. Their investigation reveals that this is not a simple murder and robbery. The culprit is after far more, and the danger increases as our detectives get closer. The suspense, action, and interplay between the detectives make for a page-turner that is most satisfying.

Detective Bennett becomes involved in investigating a Mexican drug cartel leader, that has world class training, both in business and has developed an attitude of unconcern, as he believes himself greater than the common folk.During the investigation Detective Bennett manages to chase the suspect and apprehend him, and in so doing,witnesses the suspect killing someone to enhance his chances in order to get away.The suspect's organization kills the presiding judge of the trial and the manages a daring escape all on the orders of the suspect, as he corrupts anyone around him.An excellently written book from a well known writer.

My grandson was assigned this book to read in his fifth grade work. He told me that he thought it was a well-told story and that the characters were very realistic. He perceived quickly that it was a story about civil rights and he asked me if I knew anything about 1963. We had a good discussion and he was very impressed when he learned that two important things had happened in the summer of 1963 in addition to the Birmingham church bombing. One of course was my graduation from high school and the second was Dr. King's famous speech on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial.

The Watsons go to Birmingham -1963 was overall my favorite book of 2016. I just recently read the book in my seventh grade reading class. Personally I thought the novel was a eye-opening, heart-warming, page-turning book. The way the whole book was laid out was brilliant, all of the characters played such an important part in the novel. For example, Byron is a juvenile delinquent, but a softie at heart. In the book when Kenny, Joetta,and By went swimming Joey, and Byron listened to Grandma Sands, and stayed away from Collier’s Landing. Kenny, on the other hand, did not. Before Kenny went swimming Byron told Kenny, and Joetta this long story about Winnie the Poohs evil twin brother, the Wool Pooh. Once Kenny went swimming he got caught in the whirlpool. When Kenny got caught Byron came running after Kenny and jumped in after him. Under the water Kenny thought Byron was the Wool Pooh, and started trying to fight him off. Luckily, Byron was stronger Kenny and managed to pull him back up out of the water. When he did Byron was kissing Kennys head and thanking god that he got there in time. The chapter “I Meet Winnie's Evil Twin Brother, the Wool Pooh” is an amazing way to show how Byron and Kenny feel towards each other. Its also a great example to show how complex Byron's personality is.I also loved how Christopher Paul Curtis came up with all of these family moments that not only brought them closer together but made YOU feel like YOU’RE in the book watching them!The last thing i'm going to add on to my comment is that I would recommend this novel too other young kids my age. It’s an amazing book that you’ll never want to put down!

All the Watsons appealed to me, because they were all fully-fleshed, multi-dimensional characters. The plot was absorbing, with lots of funny lines. I learned new things from this book - especially what it must've been like to be near that terrible bombing when it occurred, and how vulnerable African American individuals were in that time and place. I wish the aftermath of the bombing would have been more a part of the story, rather than a terrible event near the end of the book. In fact, I would've given up some of the amusing antics earlier in the story, in exchange for finding out more about the bombing and its effects on Birmingham and on society. In addition, I was not completely convinced by the two episodes in which Kenny and Joey provided mysterious, other-worldly help to each other. I prefer that novels be either grounded in reality or obviously imaginary; I'm not excited about combining the two. But that's just me. I liked the Watsons, I liked Kenny, and I liked his story.

A profound and often hilarious account of a black family in Michigan and their (short-lived) visit to Birmingham, Alabama, in 1963. The young narrator's voice feels so authentic and the evolution of the sibling dynamics very realistic. Their visit South describes the terror of the church bombing that killed innocent African-American Sunday School children and traumatizes the narrator. The older brother, formerly a tormentor of the narrator and a cut-up at school, comes to his rescue -- so love and family strength in the end wins out. Realistic dialogue and events throughout this highly readable classic that should be required in all 5th/6th grade classrooms. C.P Curtis is now a favorite author of my 10 year old grand-daughter and myself (a retired teacher & elem. principal).

When I first chose this book to read, I only went by the brief description that told what the book was about. Little did I know that when I began to read the book, I would feel as if I, myself was living through the Watsons. They had normal family drama, sibling rivalry, behavioral issues (that now a days, we would put our child on medication for) There are high points in the book as well as low points. But the family pulls together to get through the tough times. Although the book takes place in the 1960's, it seems to encompass some modern day problems in our society. Discrimination is still eminent in our society today but I feel it has gotten a bit better since the time frame in which this story took place. Through Kenny's eyes we are able to uncover what his feelings and fears are towards every day life, his brother and the incidents in Birmingham, Alabama. It is how this family comes through that has drawn me deeper into this book. The audience that I would gear this towards would be grades 5 - 7 because I feel at this age, they are most impressionable and would really allow the Watsons into their learning environment and minds.

Christopher Paul Curtis has been my 10 year old son's favorite author for a few years now. There's so much humor and love - relationships between characters are affectionately but unsentimentally drawn. This book, in particular, had such an honest depiction of sibling relationships. From the teasing to the sometimes brutal way children treat those they're closest to to the underlying tie of complete loyalty and understanding, I never doubted the portrayal of any of the characters. Do be careful, though - if you're reading this out loud, you'll probably cry.

Good read, enjoyable and as always interesting tidbits from Berman. I wasn't sure about the rating for a confusing reason. Some of the tangential side trips that he posits are downright intriguing, and I thought that he was going too far afield from the subject topic. Then I realized that I would research the topic much further as the possibilities are very important to me and my family, especially the chapter on UV. So in the end Berman made me think and dig further into some topics. Kink of like homework, but purely voluntary so can't complain after all.

As a physics teacher, I usually race through the EM spectrum. With this book, I understand a lot more interesting aspects of the various bands, which is going to make me want to have my students spend a little more time and gain a deeper appreciation.

If you are interested in everyday science written in a clear and interesting manner, thus book is for you. The author provides a great historical account of discoveries related to invisible light. Highly recommended.

Those who don't learn our sometimes shameful history are doomed to repeat it, at least in rhyme.One of the best, and saddest, purchases I've ever made.Born in 1955 in the border state of Kentucky, I saw vestiges of this even in my day as a white kid in a small industrial town. My text books had a School System stamp in them, encouraging the user to take care of the property entrusted to them. Why did they also have a CHECK ONE block with ( ) White and ( ) Colored? In 1961?Still, in 2018, are we repeating all this? Sadly, most would say we are. Some would say that's a good thing. Oh, the disgust...can't we all just see each other for what we are, not what color we are?

As our country gradually devolves back to a darker time, such a pamphlet was necessary for black citizens to use as a guide to travel safely on our nation’s highways. It’s now 2018 , and such a book seems relavent again. Read this book and get a perspective to a time when our grandparents actually had to use a manuel like this just to make it to their chosen destination alive. So sad, but true.

Very grateful that this copy of such an important historical reference book has been made available. Good luck finding and affording an original green book. This copy version allows the reader to journey to a time where safe spaces for people of color had to be compiled to avoid dangerous exchanges. It is amazing to see cities with pages of safe locations that registered with the green book and contrastly towns with maybe one gas station. An important piece of history.

A welcome reprint of an important little book. Not exactly the type of book that you "read," but an interesting reference to show what it was like for black Americans in the first half of the 19th century. It's interesting and tragic to see how few businesses welcomed blacks, and how few large or major businesses are among the nationwide listings.

Yes, it is proof of how things were and are. It also shows why we do things to this day like pack food for a trip, even thought things are so convenient today. The book was in great condition.

Learn about the history of our country from the point of view of black citizens. Imagine needing a travel book to find businesses and homes that will sell to you or give you a meal or a bed for the night. I was shocked to see that my home city in Michigan had not a single listing. This piece of history really shows you how bad things were.

An important part of the cultural history of our nation for Blacks and non-Blacks. The need for this book was real, folks, and to guide the future, we need to understand the past.

I bought this after hearing about it while watching PBS. I know this is a reproduction, but given the current political climate, it may be time to do a new one

I have long been a bit fascinated by Gov. Christie and his ‘in your face, shock and awe’ approach to politics. In my mind, it’s based on the Rush Limbaugh philosophy. Of course, I abhor pundits and politicians who use this tactic, because it, ultimately, crowds out other ideas and tends to weaken democracy.So, my hope was to glean an understanding of Christie, Donald Trump, and the dynamics of Trump’s inner circle. Did I succeed?Yes, to a greater extent than I probably should have. Indeed, I have grown disappointed at just how similar Trump’s team is to that displayed on the old TV soap opera, Dallas. But that gets ahead of this review...BLUSH FACTOR: Although the number of eff-words is not large, they are present, so consider your own circumstances before purchasing this. For me, it did not detract. Nor do I think anybody should refuse to buy this book for the cussing.WRITING & EDITING: Co-writer Ellis Henican has done a terrific job of polishing up what must have been a dynamic tirade.Possibly, the most telling passage comes in the discussion of Gov. Christie’s appointment to chair the transition. We get a little insight into Trump’s mind, but we get a keener insight into Jared Kushner and, possibly, into precisely what threatens to derail the Trump Presidency.DISAPPOINTMENTS: Christie does give us some frank assessment of Donald Trump, but with nowhere near the degree of frankness for which The former governor was famed. Mind you, we should not be surprised, for he remains a Trump loyalist. Still, I had hoped that he would use his shock and awe to rattle Donald Trump in a sort of shock treatment, before the Administration implodes upon itself.BOTTOM LINEFar more interesting read than recent books by Ms Clinton, so I definitely recommend it. But, don’t expect a great deal of sizzle. A total waste of time. Its basically Christie saying "look at me, look at how great I am." Its a self serving, self congratulatory, pat on his own back full of nonsense.It makes you realize how much like Trump he really is. A bully, a braggart, someone who thought only he could fix it when it came to NJ. After reading this all I can think is this is his lead up to another run.

To me it’s a great compliment when someone tells me that I write like I talk… and I talk like I write. That is definitely the compliment I am giving Chris Christie. His straight from the heart storytelling of his life… is just like listening to him talk on a TV program. He shares with the reader his toughness… as well as his inner soul. From the love of his parents and family… to the hard times he had in his early marriage… pride intertwined with disappointment in how his high school baseball career wound up… to being a U.S. Attorney… hell bent on cleaning up the government in New Jersey… where in a seven year period his office would charge nearly ten percent of their state legislature.His story will grab you right from the get-go… starting off with a mano-a-mano confrontation with Trump “campaign CEO”… Steve Bannon. (Actually it couldn’t have been mano-a-mano… because each “mano” needs a spine and integrity… and only one of them… Christie… fit those requirements.) When Bannon was firing Christie from the campaign despite Christie’s heavy involvement and direction… including but not limited to… being the first major political figure to endorse candidate Trump. From there the author goes back to his childhood… his upbringing his education… his early jobs… and his almost lifetime love of politics which was originally nurtured by his Grandmother… his rise through the many branches of government… including his two terms as New Jersey Governor… and his run for President.All the names that are constantly on the news every day of our lives now… from the big to the small… and the ones we wished would disappear… from Clinton to Rubio to Conway to Manafort… to Bush(s)… to Sessions to Obama(s)… all the cabinet members… and opponents. Christie's’ wild ride includes an almost choice as Vice Presidential candidate… and consideration for Attorney General…If that isn’t enough… there is Springsteen and “SHAQ”... and a Hurricane created by Mother Nature… named Sandy… and the human hurricane named Christie… described as only Chris Christie is capable of doing! I don’t care what side of the aisle you sit on… this is a book that almost turns its own pages… once you open it up.

I have always been on the fence about Christie and in this book he won me over a bit more. I admire the work he did as US attorney and I do think he is smart. I think he is being conned by Trump and still doesn’t see him for what he is. One thing I do agree with, he spent a lot of time and effort on the transition, and all of it went into the trash. This was due to Kushner and the axe he has to grind with his father’s arrest and conviction. I also agree that Trump filled his cabinet with grifters, and crooks, look, most are now indicted, or have plead guilty. Christie does take a lot of time in the book patting himself on the back, which I am sure many of us would do. Come on, he had the lowest rating of any governor ever when he left, he couldn’t have done that without screwing up.

A straight talker, articulate, interesting even when infuriating to many. But this book is a total bore. Nothing new. A puff piece, written in a non-controversial way, so that, if he runs for office, or faces senate hearings, he hasn't insulted anybody. Sadly, Governor, you apparently ARE finished.

I’ve been a fan of Gov Christie for a long time. I loved it when he got in Rubios face during the debate and Rubio melted on stage. This book provides a real account inside the 2016 election. If you’re a Republican you’ll enjoy it. Dems will obviously give it a one star.
