With the announcement today of the completion of mapping of the human genome, this book takes on particular importance. The book was published in 1997, and as further evidence of the technological hyperdrive of the 21st century and the incredible advances in sequencing technology since 1997, the author predicts on page 244 that the Human Genome Project would take 23 more years, and be completed by 2020! The book is excellent, for the author gives brilliant arguments both supporting genetic technologies and countering many that don't. In addition, the author discusses possibilities in reproductive technologies that may be unknown to a reader, like myself, who is not an expert in embryology. For example, he discusses the occurrence (although rare) of natural-born chimeric human beings, who arose from the fusion of two embryos that resulted from the fertilization of two eggs that had been ovulated simultaneously by their mother. Another example discussed is the possibility of a fertilized egg winding up in the peritoneal cavity (in the abdomen essentially). This example was discussed in the context of whether indeed a man could carry a pregnancy. Some of the other interesting arguments and discussions in the book include: 1. When addressing the assertion that it is unfair for only the wealthy to take advantage of genetic technologies for enhancing their progeny, the author agrees that it is, but he then states correctly that a society that accepts the right of wealthy parents to provide their children with a top-notch private education cannot use "unfairness" as a reason for denying the use of genetic technologies. 2. His discussion of the status of the embryo as human life, which he argues, brilliantly, is not. "If a human life can begin in the absence of conception" he says, "then it is scientifically invalid to say that conception must mark the beginning of each human life. It is as simple as that". 3. The discussion of the history of in vitro fertilization, the ethical issues surrounding it, and the technologies needed to bring it about. The author regards IVF as a pivotal point in history, in which humans took charge of their reproductive destiny. 4. The discussion of cloning, elaborating naturally on the cloning of Dolly the sheep. He states that the cloning of Dolly "broke the technological barrier" and that there is "no reason to expect that the technology couldn't be transferred to human cells." Recent experiments in the last few months however have cast doubt on the ability to do cloning of primates, and so human cloning could therefore be problematic. The author though counters very successfully the arguments against the practice of human cloning. The author has a refreshing optimism throughout the book, and he remains confident in the human ability to both understand the world and change it with proven and safe technologies. In light of the completion of the mapping of the human genome, his optimism is certainly justified. The technologies discussed in this book, coupled with the information obtained from the complete human genome, promise an incredibly interesting future for biology. Both the author and the individuals behind the human genome project are excellent examples of the ingenuity and mental discipline of the human species.

This book presents some interesting ideas. Some of them are a bit controversial, so I would exercise a bit of caution. Overall, it's a pretty good book.

Great book!

Very pleased

I highly recommend this book. It is at once provocative and well-written. Anyone with curiosity about, and concern for, our future as a species needs to become familiar with the exciting and disturbing possibilities this book presents.

For those with no previous interest in genetic engineering, this book may provide some insight. However, it's self promoting and has little in the way of new or unique information.

I think the underlying ethos of this book is techno-utopianism. Silver believes science can and will create a new world where the human race will essentially become gods. He does point out some problems like the fact that poor people will not be able to afford these and so the wealthy may end up engineering themselves into a separate race, however nowhere in this book is any doubt that science can accomplish this. Essentially Mr. Silver is a neo-enlightenment thinker, who believes the human race has no limits. I'm a skeptic in that that the more I look back on history, the more I realize that human nature is pretty fixed. People have dreamed of being like gods for centuries, and it hasn't happened. We are developing better treatments for disease, although I think people like Silver and other utopians like Ray Kurzweil (in a different direction) tend to underestimate the extreme complexity of the biological process. They believe that because we can decode the genome, it means we can engineer it. In reality things are so complex that I believe it is hubris to suggest humans can simply do everything. We understand how the sun works, but we cannot create a second solar system. In the end I think there are two sides to Mr. Silver. I am sure he is a deeply intelligent professor, on the other hand he runs away with his science fiction dreams. He simply assumes given enough time we will magically be able to accomplish all this. He ignores an important point that people like Peter Thiel have brought up, which is outside of advances in computing, technology has actually slowed down over the past several decades.

It says in the bio the writer teaches at Princeton, but based on the writing, listless and without a compelling narrative, I can only hope the gentleman works as a subsitute teacher, rather than someone fully tenured. For a far more gripping story, both in information and narrative style, read MERCHANTS of IMMORTALITY. Science writing at it's very best!

Incredibly interesting!!! This book explains a lot about objects in the Kuiper belt, and why Pluto is like them and unlike the rest of the planets. It tells us about an astronomer's day-to-day work and life (or lack of one until he meets the right woman). I still say, "Poor Pluto," and feel bad that it was demoted from "planetdom", but then, Pluto isn't a person, is it?Check out a free class on Coursera that Mike Brown is teaching at Cal Tech on Solar System science -- he has me interested in the Solar System again, just when I was thinking we already knew all about it.

Mike Brown is a planetary scientist who, along with others, has discovered several dwarf planets, which, it turns out, are not planets at all -- they're something lesser and not necessarily only lesser in size. What is a planet, anyway? That's a tough question, one that's boggled great minds and those of us who are simply curious about planets in general. The latest controversy (and, no, it's not the only one in history) came about not so very long ago when the experts began to wonder if Pluto really was a planet. The world certainly knew it as one but it had fallen on hard times when it was discovered over a number of years that it's just not very big. In fact, it's smaller than our own moon. In fact there are a number of moons that are larger than our own moon and yet no one calls them a planet. Well, that's simple: they're orbiting planets so they've got to be moons, right?Maybe, kinda, well, hmmmm. The problem here is how to classify planets or moons for that matter. All of the planets are different. There are different kinds of planets -- terrestrial planets are named after Earth (terra) and include Mercury, Venus, Earth & Mars; then there are the Jovian ones, named after Jupiter (Jove). Terrestrial planets are rocky ones, Jovians are the gasbags -- Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune -- and yet all of them are very different. Earth has oceans, the other terrestrials don't. Jupiter is bigger than all the other planets combined. And now we have Dwarf Planets, but they decided that they are NOT really planets, though the word is included.Very puzzling indeed. Real planets, like the original 8 (NOT Pluto, not anymore!) are the ones that have a "dominant effect" on the solar system. I would never argue that Jupiter is anything but a major player around here what with its powerful gravitational field and all. But Mercury? It's small, hard to see oftentimes, and poses very little threat. The lesser stuff, those non-planets like asteroids and such that may get hurled in our direction to cause mass destruction (if and when they hit us) or joy (like when they run into Jupiter) seem a much more dominant effect to me.I could go on and on and on but I wouldn't help you understand. But I'm happy to report that this book is not only good at explaining these problems but is very readable and even well-rounded -- we hear a lot about his young daughter who was a newborn baby when he got involved with the Pluto controversy and who actually communicated through sign language before she could speak. And she likes planets. Now THAT's a good kid! And you'll also learn about just how hard it is to find out about those faraway bodies that Dr. Brown and his colleagues are discovering -- we still really don't know how big Pluto truly is (though we'll get a better handle on it New Horizons spacecraft has just reached it).A very good book, indeed! Another related one is "The Pluto Files" by Neil deGrasse Tyson.

If you enjoy astronomy or the process of scientific discovery, this memoir is for you. Mike Brown, astrophysicist and professor of planetary systems at Caltech, has penned a warm, witty account of his discovery of the dwarf planet Eris and his finding (but perhaps not discovery) of the dwarf planet Haumea.Brown's book brings the reader inside the world of high stakes astronomy and the workings of the International Astronomical Union. More importantly, Brown educates readers about how planets are discovered and whether or not these discoveries should be immediately announced. Most crucially, Brown explains why Pluto was demoted to dwarf planet status. I've always felt badly about this decision (as Brown notes, I was one of the many who asked "What did Pluto ever do to *you*?), but I must agree with his arguments as to why the reclassification makes sense. (One quibble: I'm not sure whether Brown has presented the views of Pluto's defenders accurately. If he has, they don't have much of a scientific leg to stand on, even if they are the sentimental favorites.)If you're a Pluto devotee, this memoir will likely make you more comfortable with Pluto's downgrade. But even if it doesn't, it's a treat to meet Mike Brown, his devoted colleagues and the family he treasures: wife Diane Binney and daughter Lilah. Brown is not only informative, he's a deft writer, a keen observer and downright funny.

This is an entertaining and easily-understood account of how Pluto came to be demoted from "Planet" to "dwarf planet" status. The author was one of the people directly responsible for Pluto's new status. He gives a clear account of how it came about, and why.A major parallel story in the book is how the author discovered what was briefly thought to be the Tenth Planet. His discovery precipitated the change in both its, and Pluto's, status. The story is nicely told, in such a way that the technical details are described in an understandable way; and the personal drama that goes along with it is well told, too.If you like astronomy or are simply interested in how the universe works, I think you will find this a fun and informative book.

It spends a large amount of time detailing his daughter's birth, and the impact her birth had on his life both personally and professionally. I expected more science, but this personal take was a pleasant surprise. The intrigue over Plato's demotion seemed like an afterthought, especially since the title implies more Pluto drama, but is still pleasurable. Is recommend this as a casual read, but you'll likely find yourself looking key information up that isnt tied to him personally, but it gives a nice overview

Please everyone on my team read this as it makes all our lives easier when we deal with your code

I have so many books and many books on JavaScript. This so far seems to be my favourite of the bunch. I have the paperback book (Which the binding came unglued almost immediately - only con on this book I have against it) and I have the eBook. I use the eBook the most sitting on my desktop next to my laptop and external keyboard/mouse and find I can learn from it easily. I've already learned so much about ES6+ (ECMAScript) not starting with only Vanilla and moving forward but intertwining the newer changes to the language with the old and showing along the way (whether on purpose or not) how to refactor the code so it is more concise using the new shortcuts implement into JavaScript over the last few years. And it builds on topics, gives test questions to rattle your mind a bit and you can tell it was written by someone with Industry inside experience. And one interesting thing I learned from it which the books pounds into you is you need to manage the fine line between shorter/less/cleaner code and efficiency. Sometimes if performance is in question slopppy and longer written out code might suit your needs better. It's a 5 star book. I've been waiting many months for this books to come out and it was worth the wait.

If you are looking to learn JavaScript, this book is essential and well written. I enjoyed it very much as it provides good concepts and relates them to things anyone can understand. Thanks!

Eloquent JavaScript is unlike so many of the educational materials out there. It is complete and thorough in a sense that few books or websites are. For being a single book that doesn't read like a dense textbook, it spans a surprising amount of material, including asynchronous programming, node, and data immutability. Some of these concepts have their own chapters, but many of these concepts are introduced within the context of a problem that they help solve rather than being formally discussed.I've removed one star for a reason that will be an issue for many people. This book is *hard* as an intro text. It very quickly goes from introducing basic concepts and syntax into higher order/first class functions then into asynchronous programming. It ramps up very quickly, and in order to really understand the content, you will likely find yourself revisiting sections several times. There will be times where new syntax is simply introduced without explanation until later in the chapter. In my read through there were times that I needed to pull up documentation or head over to StackOverflow in order to figure out what the hell just happened.Personally I see this as a weakness *and* a strength. The book is engaging and leads you along a very carefully planned path, but it also requires you to think for yourself and to extend your research beyond the book itself. As he builds up the code example that the chapter is based around, you will find yourself lost at times. This is a good thing. Just because something is hard doesn't mean it isn't worthwhile. Being forced to parse more difficult code rather than just learning each bit of the language in isolation is, imo, a better route to understanding as it gives context. If you want something that is quick and easy to work through, or that is laser focused on each feature and can be used as a reference, I would recommend a different book. This book is a journey and can be a tough climb at times but it is worth it.

Very detailed and thorough, I was getting frustrated with the online course I was taking, the explanations in this book helped me understand what I was doing. Finally finding this resource was like taking a breath of fresh air.

I read the first and second edition. Now reading the third edition. A must read book for any JavaScript Developer.

I read the previous edition of this book, but my comments concern features of the book that seem to hold true of the latest edition. I am jealous of the inline art and code styling, though. Those look like they went from good to even better. This book is well-suited to an instructional environment where JavaScript is being used as an introductory language to programming. The material is just dense enough to provide a challenge to students without being alienating to new programmers. The author has a nice habit of mixing the basics with some of the behind-the-scenes implementation details. Even as a professional JavaScript engineer, there were many moments in the book that taught me something new.If you are an independent 'learn to code and change careers' sort of reader, I would actually steer you away from this book. I would steer you away from any book. Focus on online resources that force you in front of a terminal window or force you to do coding exercises online (Code Wars, Leetcode, Code Fights, Code Abbey, etc.). Without an instructor forcing you to type out all of the examples and exercises, this book could become a tool for procrastination.

I read reviews for several baby signing books before settling on this one. I specifically appreciate that the dictionary part of this book is alphabetical, and that each sign comes memory helpers which help me to understand where certain signs come from. It is the perfect book to have lying on your kitchen table to you can quickly refer to it if you need a sign that you forgot. ;) I have had this book for only a week and have already integrated 20 signs into our day with my 8 month old. I am looking forward to having a way to communicate with him once he begins to produce the signs.

One of my first thoughts, when I hear someone is going to become a parent or a grandparent for the first time, is to get them this book. ASL is so easy to teach to babies and will serve not only to help them communicate with adults even before they are able to talk, but also will help you and your child communicate in public without interrupting conversations or shouting in noisy places. This book has easy to understand instructions and illustrations. I've found it helpful to copy certain pages to show daycare providers the signs the child understands or uses.

My second copy, bought for my daughter to use with her little one. I taught him enough signing that at a little over a year old, he is talking to HER in sign and she needs an interpreter! When little ones can use sign for their wants, needs and desires, you'll hear less crying and probably a lot fewer tantrums as they reach that age where they want it all and cannot put it into words yet. LOL But seriously, this book is wonderful in how clearly they show each sign and explain more of the how and why of each sign. I have been using sign with little ones for over 20 years and this is one of the better books on the market for clarity and usefulness. No one book has it all but if you only have one book, I think this just might be the one!

I love this book! It is my first signing book I've purchased sofar for baby and I am very happy with it. I love that it is actual ASL so baby (and me!) is learning an actual language that if she decides to persue later in life could actually lead to a career not just made up signs that only you and your baby understand (although they can be fun too ;o) Baby is 7months now and I started signing to her about 2 months ago and she is starting to display a few signs already! I am not as consistent as I should be but she is still picking it up--her favorite right now is all done...she uses this all the time when she wants to stop whatever she is doing (eating, being held, dog won't stay still to be pet lol) and start another activity. I do wish the book had more signs in it,but it has a lot of them and for someone like myself who has never learned sign language what it does have is really plenty to get started and I have not learned them all yet.Great book! I highly suggest getting this book if you want to communicate with your LO earlier!

I love the DVD set Baby Signing Time by Rachel de Azevedo Coleman, but my daughter and I were ready for more words. Since there are only two DVDs out so far, we needed another resource. This book is great! The first third of this book is broken into the following chapters:1. A Quick Course in Baby Signing2. Sign Language Development3. Signing with Your Young Baby (0-6 mos)4. " (6-12 mos)5. " (12-18 mos)and so on through 3 yearsAlso included "Signing with Your Special Needs Child" and "How to Sign and Sing." (Classic songs like "The Itsy Bitsy Spider, "Old MacDonald" and "The Wheels on the Bus"; and ones that are put to classic songs but that help reinforce your sign-vocab like the "Change Your Diaper Song" put to "She'll Be Coming 'Round the Mountain.")The rest of the book is a picture dictionary of words you will want to use when communicating with your child. Pretty much every word I have looked up in order to sing nursery songs is there. Sometimes I look for a word and it isn't there, but this doesn't happen often. And these are usually words that are not specifically geared for the little guys. It makes me hopeful that there will be a part two one day.The pictures are very helpful and clearly drawn and labeled. I keep it in my nursery and refer to it whenever I am talking to my daughter and don't have a "key word" in my sign language knowledge. If you are looking to get started with sign language, I recommend the DVDs I mentioned at the beginning AND this book.

My wife liked this book. It's pretty practical and easy to follow. The instructions for the signs are usually easy enough to understand (although i think there are some incorrect ones in there because my sister-in-law speaks sign language and she does a bunch of them quite differently). All told we probably managed to teach our son from age 1 thru 2 about 5-6 signs (all done, more, airplane, truck, and a few others) there were many others we tried but they all ended up looking the same because the subtle differences were just too difficult for our boy to do or for us to distinguish. We wished we could have done ones like: Mom, Dad, Grandma, Grandpa, hungry, thirsty, food, water, juice, tired, etc. but they just never worked out for us.

I really enjoy this book. There are several usefull signs that I am using with my 5 month old. I have been trying to sign to her since she was about 4 months. She smiles at me when I use certain signs at meal time. I like how this book has the signs listed in alphabetical order with great illustrations. There is also a section to document date the sign was introduced and date the child signed the word. Many tips in this book as well. I would definitely recommend this.

I bought A Fruit Is A Suitcase for Seeds as a gift for my son's preschool classroom during their spring study of plants, seeds, and gardening. It makes a great read-a-loud for ages two to six. The narrative is well worded, kid-friendly, and not too verbose. They served apples as the snack that day and the kids saved their seeds and planted them in handmade pots of recycled newspaper- several apple trees have sprouted!

Cute book. We used it to have people sign for a bday party.

Fantastic Book! I love this book and more importantly, the children loved it too!

This book has exquisite illustrations which enable young readers to understand about seeds in their own world of experience.

I find this book to be a great tool to use when teaching students about fruit.

Nicely illustrated book for kids age 4 - 7, which talks about how "many seeds travel inside fruits. The fruit is like a suitcase for seeds. It protects them on their trip. Fruits look beautiful and taste good, so animals and people eat them and drop the seeds in different places." It illustrates fruits with pits, some small seeds, many tiny seeds inside, and seeds on the outside. This would be a great companion to a fruit dissection project - where you could cut apart fruit with your child and count the seeds. (Even better, have them first predict how many seeds they'll find, then cut it open.) We used this book in our kids' science class as we studied seeds and plants.

The children's book presents a new idea: a suitcase! It is a lovely piece of book, with information that children might not receive from adults. It is inventive and witty.

Although beautifully illustrated and well written, the book is full of misconceptions. Seeds, for example, only require the proper temperature and moisture to germinate and not soil and sunlight. The explanation as to why seeds do not grow in our stomachs is ludicrous! Teachers and students alike have germinated seeds in plastic bags, closets, and drawers with great success. There is also no sunlight beneath the surface of the soil, where most seeds germinate. The author needs to concentrate on fiction and acting and not try to educate young learners in scientific content.
